Happy Labor Day from Western Heights Water Company! While many of us are off enjoying the long weekend, our operators and crews remain on duty, making sure your water keeps flowing safely, holidays included. Labor Day traces back to a parade organized by New York City labor unions in 1882 and became a federal holiday in 1894, honoring the contributions of workers across every industry. September is National Preparedness Month and a good time to make sure you have enough water on hand if an earthquake, wildfire, power outage, or other emergency disrupts service.

FEMA's Ready.gov recommends storing one gallon of water per person, per day for at least three days. That’s 12 gallons for a family of four. Don’t forget extra for pets! While you’re at it, check the rest of your emergency kit for nonperishable food, flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit, and a battery-powered or hand-crank radio.

Western Heights works hard to keep your water flowing. You can help make your household water-ready, too. Western Heights Water Company encourages our community to take a few minutes this month to put together a basic emergency kit and make it a habit to check it once a year. Being prepared today means peace of mind tomorrow, whatever the season brings.

Hot Days Call for Smart Hydration!

Triple-digit temperatures are here. A few simple habits can help you stay cool, stay hydrated, and make the most of your local tap water.

Here are a few easy ways to stay cool:

💧 Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Staying hydrated helps your body regulate its temperature—even if you don't feel thirsty.
🥤 Keep cold tap water ready. Fill a reusable pitcher or bottle and store it in the refrigerator. You'll always have refreshing drinking water without running the faucet while waiting for it to cool.
🧊 Cool down naturally. Place a cool, damp towel on your neck or wrists, or enjoy some time in an air-conditioned library, community center, shopping mall, or other public space during the hottest hours of the day.

Western Heights is proud to deliver safe, high-quality tap water every day. Fill your glass, refill your bottle, and stay hydrated all summer long.

Transparency matters to us. EPA regulations require every community water system to publish an annual Consumer Confidence Report, more commonly known as a Water Quality Report, sharing exactly what has been tested and found in the drinking water supply. Ours shows exactly what's in your water and how we keep it safe. Read our most recent report here:

August is National Water Quality Month! Under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, public water systems are required to test for and meet strict limits on more than 90 regulated contaminants. Western Heights Water Company is committed to going beyond the minimum, and that commitment starts with our team. Our certified operators and water quality staff work around the clock, sampling, testing, and monitoring our system, so that the water reaching your tap is safe, clean, and dependable every time you turn it on.

Beat the heat! Find a list of Riverside County cool center locations at https://capriverside.org/cool-centers.

As the temperatures rise in Riverside County, we urge residents to take simple precautions to protect their health in response to elevated temperatures.

Prevention tips include:
• Drink plenty of water (even if you don't feel thirsty).
• Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
• Avoid strenuous activity outdoors, take breaks and stay in the shade.
• Never leave children or pets inside a parked car, even for a short time.
• Use a buddy system and check in with them regularly if you are outdoors for an extended period of time.

• Check on elderly neighbors, children and pets.

Symptoms of heat stroke, the most serious heat-related illness, include confusion, loss of consciousness, hot and dry skin (though sweating may still occur in some cases) and seizures. While considered less severe than heat stroke, heat exhaustion can present with headache, nausea, dizziness, weakness, thirst, heavy sweating and irritability. Both require prompt medical attention.

Air-conditioned cool centers hosted by Community Action Partnership of Riverside County are available throughout Riverside County for those needing relief from the heat. Libraries, community centers and malls are also options for anyone needing a quick cool down. Find a map of locations here: https://capriverside.org/cool-centers.

July is Smart Irrigation Month! How you water your lawn matters just as much as how often you do it, and a few small changes can go a long way for our watershed.

Start by running your system and watching it. Look for broken heads, misaligned sprinklers, or anything spraying the driveway instead of the grass. A cracked head can waste thousands of gallons silently all summer long.

From there, make sure your timer is set to water before 9 a.m. Cooler morning temperatures mean far less evaporation and deeper absorption into the soil, so your lawn actually gets more out of every gallon.

Those two steps alone can make a meaningful difference. Your watershed will thank you!

This Independence Day, we're taking a moment to recognize the dedicated team that keeps your water flowing.

Every time you turn on the tap at home, work, or school, you're relying on trained professionals who operate and maintain our water system. Operators, laboratory staff, maintenance crews, and engineers work around the clock to monitor water quality, maintain equipment, respond to emergencies, and complete the upgrades that keep safe, reliable water flowing throughout our community.

While many of us gather with family and friends this holiday, members of our team will still be on call—ready to respond if our community needs them. We are grateful for their commitment to public service and to protecting one of our most essential resources.

From all of us at Western Heights Water Company, we wish you and your family a safe, happy, and memorable Fourth of July!

Summer is here, and that means higher water use both indoors and out. Before the season gets into full swing, take 15 minutes to check your home for leaks.

Look for dripping faucets, running toilets, leaking hose bibs, and irrigation problems. Then check your water meter when no water is being used. If it's still moving, you may have a hidden leak.
Even small leaks can waste thousands of gallons of water each year. Many are inexpensive and easy to fix.

Because Western Heights relies on local groundwater supplies, every gallon saved helps protect this valuable resource and keeps water available for our community.
