The South African National Council for the Blind (SANCB) hosted a White Cane Awareness and Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) event at Madiba Banqueting Halls to raise awareness about the rights, safety, inclusion, and mobility of persons who are blind or visually impaired.
The event was supported by various stakeholders, including JB Marks Local Municipality, Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality, Department of Health, Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, disability organisations, elderly persons, persons with disabilities, albinism community, and the Taxi Association. Their participation and collaboration contributed to the success of the event and reinforced the importance of promoting inclusivity, accessibility, and the rights of persons with disabilities.
The event aimed to educate communities, motorists, stakeholders, and the general public about the importance of the white cane in promoting the independence, mobility, and safety of persons with visual impairments, while also raising awareness about Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) and promoting the protection, dignity, and rights of persons with disabilities.
