MVSS - REMEMBERING THE YOUTH OF JUNE 16,1976

As South Africa commemorates 50 years since the historic June 16, 1976 Youth Uprising, Mountview Secondary School proudly celebrates its own 50th anniversary.

To honour these two significant milestones, our learners formed the number 50 in the school quad, symbolising 50 years of youth courage, sacrifice, education and excellence.

We remember the brave youth of 1976 whose struggle helped shape the future of education in South Africa, while celebrating five decades of Mountview's commitment to empowering generations of learners.

MVSS SCOOPS TWO PLACES IN THE ETHEKWINI MUNICIPAL LIBRARIES & HERITAGE - DISTRICT 2 SPEECH CONTEST

Two of our Grade 9 learners participated in the District 2 Speech Contest held Stonebridge Library yesterday, 11 June 2026. Tylen Naidoo and Liyakha Sonjica represented our school superbly, with Tylen taking first place and Liyakha coming in at third place. The theme for the 2026 contest was 'Electronic resources and their impact in Public Libraries as a social and intellectual part of the community.'

Mrs S. Naidoo, senior English Home Language educator, who accompanied these outstanding speakers said, "Both our learners delivered phenomenal speeches!". Well done to Mrs D. Pillay, Departmental Head of LLC and the English educators who assisted in the selection of our participants and for offering them the necessary support.

Today, in preparation for Youth Day on 16 June, Mrs S Sewpersad and Miss N P Zondi from the Humanities Department collaborated to organize a special presentation at school. The programme aimed to commemorate the significance of Youth Day while encouraging learner participation and school spirit.

The event featured a meaningful speech delivered by one of our learners, highlighting the importance of the youth in shaping South Africa's future. A group of boys entertained the audience with an energetic dance performance, which was well received by both learners and staff.

To celebrate our school's 50th anniversary this year, we also coordinated a special formation activity where the learner population assembled to create the number "50". This memorable display symbolized five decades of excellence, growth, and achievement within our school community.

The presentation was a wonderful success, showcasing learner talent, teamwork, and pride in both our nation's history and our school's rich legacy.

"It was inspiring to see our learners participate enthusiastically in honouring Youth Day while celebrating this significant milestone in our school's history", commented Mrs S. Sewpersad.

Educators also dressed in in item of their school uniform to mark the day.
