GOV’T SAYS PROPOSED MSME BILL TO STRENGTHEN SECTOR

Government says the proposed Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Bill will provide a dedicated legal and institutional framework to support the sector's growth, formalization and competitiveness.

Northern Province Assistant Secretary, Jordan Mwenya, says the MSME sector is a key driver of economic growth, employment creation, poverty reduction and wealth generation, particularly among women, youth and vulnerable groups.

Speaking on behalf of the Acting Permanent Secretary at the official opening of the two-day stakeholder consultation on the draft Bill at the Provincial Administration, Mr. Mwenya said the absence of dedicated legislation has led to fragmented support, limited access to finance and weak institutional coordination.

“The consultation offers an opportunity for government, the private sector and other stakeholders to scrutinize the draft Bill and propose improvements”, said Mr. Mwenya in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.

He has urged participants to share their views freely to ensure the final law reflects the realities of MSMEs and creates an enabling environment for growth, innovation and job creation.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise Development Assistant Director for Business Development and Grants, Chikula Chinyanta, said stakeholder input is critical in shaping a Bill that is responsive to the sector's needs.

Mr. Chinyanta said the consultations, which are being conducted across all provinces, aim to gather views from associations, chambers of commerce and other players, and that all submissions will be considered when finalizing the Bill, which is central to advancing the Grow Zambia Agenda.
