CMC WELCOMES FOUR PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION COUNCILLORS

Chongwe Municipal Council has welcomed four newly nominated Councillors under the proportional representation electoral system, following their nomination by the United Party for National Development (UPND).

The four Councillors are Shamiso Makumbiro and Lexina Lungu, representing women .

Agnes Mwakalombe, representing the youth and Beatrice Chama representing persons living with disabilities.

Their nominations are pursuant to Part IVA of the Electoral Process (Amendment) Act No. 12 of 2026, which provides for the proportional representation electoral system for councils.

The new framework provides for the representation of women, youth and persons with disabilities in local government, promoting broader participation and inclusion in governance.

Chongwe Municipal Council looks forward to working with the newly nominated Councillors as part of its continued efforts to strengthen inclusive representation, participatory governance and effective service delivery to the people of Chongwe.

GREAT EAST ROAD CRASH TRIGGERS TRUCK FIRE, TWO INJURED

Rufunsa- Wednesday 23 September 2026.

Chongwe Municipal Council Fire Brigade responded to a serious road traffic accident involving a truck and trailer that caught fire along the Great East Road in Rufunsa District.

The Fire Brigade received the distress call at about 15:08 hours yesterday abd and immediately responded, arriving at the scene at approximately 16:45 hours.

Upon arrival, officers found a truck, trailer and another vehicle extensively burnt. The fire was successfully extinguished using two hose reels and one main delivery hose, drawing water from the fire truck's onboard tank.

The truck, belonging to SOM Transport Logistics of Mozambique, was reportedly carrying roofing nails and was travelling towards Lusaka from the Eastern Province when it collided with a stationary truck before hitting a tanker carrying diesel. The impact resulted in the vehicles catching fire.

Two passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to Mpasha Hospital by a district ambulance before being transferred to Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital for further treatment. Mr. Moses Njobvu sustained severe burns and fractured hands, while Ms. Chipo Muyangana, aged 27, sustained a cut to the forehead.

The truck driver reportedly fled the scene following the accident.

The response involved Chongwe and Rufunsa Fire Brigades, State Police and other relevant authorities.

MAYOR-ELECT ENCOURAGES YOUTHS TO EMBRACE SPORTS

Chongwe Mayor-Elect, His Worship Mr. Fredrick Sashi, has encouraged young people to remain committed to sports, describing sporting activities as an important way of keeping youths positively engaged and away from drug abuse and other harmful activities.

The Mayor-Elect was speaking when he attended a community sports tournament at Mudoka Ground, where young people came together to showcase their talent, promote teamwork and strengthen community bonds.

His Worship Mr. Sashi reaffirmed his commitment to supporting sports, stating that he has a passion for sporting activities and believes they play an important role in keeping young people engaged in productive pursuits.

The winning teams walked away with K15,000, jerseys and footballs, while the runners-up also received jerseys, footballs and cash prizes in recognition of their efforts.

Also in attendance were Kapete Area Councillor Mr. Francis Kabichi and the Mulenge Ward Councillor.

CMC FIRE BRIGADE EXTINGUISHES TRUCK FIRE ALONG GREAT EAST ROAD

Chongwe_ Sunday 20 September 2026 .

Chongwe Municipal Council Fire Brigade responded to a truck fire in the Katende area, near Katende Market along the Great East Road.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a Scania truck, registration number B.A.T 7742, well alight. The truck, belonging to Shikabe Investment Limited, was being driven by a 53-year-old Mr. Mwale of Obama area, Lusaka, and was travelling from Lusaka towards the Eastern Province.

The fire is suspected to have been caused by a mechanical fault.

Firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze using two hose reels supplied from the fire appliance’s main water tank. The 18-tonne truck sustained extensive damage as a result of the fire.

Motorists are urged to ensure their vehicles are regularly serviced and mechanically sound to help prevent vehicle fires and other road emergencies.
