Access to safe and reliable water remains a critical driver of healthy, productive and resilient communities.

Recognizing the challenges posed by water shortages across Chongwe District, Chongwe Municipal Council has, over the last four years, intensified efforts to expand and improve access to water through strategic investments, rehabilitation works and partnerships.

Using its own-source revenue, the Council has drilled 6 new hand pumps, rehabilitated 63 hand pumps and developed 2 mechanized water schemes, bringing essential water services closer to communities that previously faced significant challenges in accessing safe water.

Through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), an additional 62 hand pumps and 9 water schemes have been provided, further strengthening the districtโ€™s water supply infrastructure and responding to the needs of communities across various constituencies.

The Councilโ€™s efforts have also been complemented by the Ministry of Water Development and Supply, which has supported Chongwe with 15 hand pumps and 1 water scheme, while also rehabilitating 10 hand pumps and upgrading 7 hand pumps into water schemes.

In addition, support from development partners and other stakeholders, including organisations such as UNICEF and World Vision, has played a significant role in expanding water access. Through these partnerships, the district has secured 78 hand pumps and 13 water schemes, while 67 hand pumps have been rehabilitated.

These combined interventions demonstrate what can be achieved when local government, central government, communities and cooperating partners work together towards a common goal.

Beyond the numbers, these investments are helping to reduce the distance communities travel in search of water, improve access to safe water and contribute to better health, sanitation, education and livelihoods.
