STRENGTHENING LEGAL METROLOGY THROUGH PERFORMANCE AND PROFESSIONAL EXCELLENCE

The Director of Legal Metrology -Dr Eng Michael Nsefu is currently in Ndola, Northern Region, engaging the team on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and strengthening the Department's commitment to improved service delivery.

The engagement also provides an opportunity to share updates on key strategic projects, including the proposed Tanker Truck Verification Centre, the Centre of Excellence, and the procurement of two test trucks, test weights and other metrology standards.

The Director further emphasises that the success of these investments depends not only on modern equipment and infrastructure, but also on the people entrusted with delivering services. Staff are encouraged to uphold the highest standards of integrity, professionalism and ethical conduct, recognising that public confidence in Legal Metrology is built through competence, transparency and accountability.

VERIFICATION OF CONCRETE BLOCKS UNDER LEGAL METROLOGY

Did you know that concrete blocks are subject to verification under Legal Metrology to ensure that they conform to prescribed dimensions and allowable tolerances?

The verification process focuses on the finished concrete blocks, not the moulds used to manufacture them. This helps promote accuracy, consistency and fairness in the construction industry.

How are concrete blocks verified?

A representative sample is randomly selected from a production batch. The blocks are first visually inspected for defects such as cracks, chips and deformities.

The length, width (thickness) and height of the blocks are then measured using calibrated measuring instruments. These measurements are compared with the prescribed nominal dimensions and allowable tolerances.

Where the blocks meet the required dimensional specifications, they pass verification. Blocks that fall outside the permitted tolerances are considered non-compliant.

Why is verification important?

Verification of concrete blocks helps to:

• Ensure dimensional accuracy and uniformity.
• Protect consumers from purchasing undersized or oversized products.
• Promote quality and safety in construction.
• Ensure fair trade between manufacturers and consumers.

The Zambia Metrology Agency (ZMA) proudly recognises Eng. Anthony Mubanso, who was among the employees honoured during the ZMA Labour Day Awards for his extraordinary performance and outstanding contribution to the Agency.

Anthony has since been presented with his Labour Day Award Certificate in recognition of his dedication, commitment and exceptional performance.
