Thanks to everyone who joined us in Port Augusta last week.

Our team held two community information sessions and attended the TACTIC Conference to chat about the project and the Environmental Impact Statement phase.

It was great to hear the community's strong interest in the tender process, local business involvement and workforce opportunities as well as key project elements such as the proposed desalination plant location, the pipeline route and the desalination process.

Survey closing soon – have your say by Sunday, 9 August.

Share your feedback and local insights to help inform the Environmental Impact Statement, which is being prepared to assess the Northern Water project’s potential environmental, social and economic impacts.

The survey asks for your views on topics including environmental protection, construction impacts, local opportunities and community benefits.

Complete the survey before Sunday, 9 August using the link in the comments.

You can also provide location-specific feedback by adding a marker to the interactive map of the proposed Project area.

During NAIDOC Week, we recognise and celebrate the enduring cultures, knowledge and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The Northern Water Project area is located on Barngarla land and Kokatha land.

A key aim of the Project is to protect and minimise impacts on areas identified as having cultural heritage significance. Aboriginal cultural heritage surveys, undertaken in collaboration with the relevant Traditional Owners, have been and continue to be used to inform project planning and development.

We’re working closely with Barngarla and Kokatha to develop Indigenous Land Use Agreements to meet the requirements of the Commonwealth Native Title Act 1993.

How is Northern Water working to protect the environment?

Environmental protection is influencing how the project is being designed, including measures designed to avoid or minimise impacts on ecosystems, both in the water and on land.

Just some of the ways the project is being designed to do this👇

✅ Tunnelling desalination plant intake and outfall pipelines to avoid disturbing sand dunes, mangroves and seagrass areas
✅ Locating the desalination plant away from sensitive coastal environments
✅ Using scientific modelling of tides, currents and water movements to ensure the design of the desalination plant meets environmental requirements
✅ Planning the pipeline to avoid cultural heritage, native vegetation and habitat wherever possible
✅ Studying local plants, animals and water conditions to better understand the area and inform project decisions
✅ Encouraging regeneration of areas affected by construction through measures such as retaining topsoil, managing weeds and supporting natural regrowth

Environmental studies and assessments are continuing to help identify potential impacts and ensure they are carefully managed.

Planning is continuing for the proposed Northern Water Project, which includes a large-scale desalination plant at Mullaquana Station, about 20 kilometres south of Whyalla, and a transfer pipeline to supply water to industry in South Australia’s Upper Spencer Gulf and Far North.

Community and stakeholder feedback continues to play an important role in our planning. An Environmental Impact Statement is also being prepared to assess potential environmental, social and economic impacts.
