Plants poisonous to livestock – know what to look out for 🕵️

As conditions continue to be variable across NSW, there could be an increased risk for livestock to toxic plants.

Pastures are more likely to contain potentially toxic plants during drought and following periods of high rainfall, so we are reminding producers to keep an eye on what plants they are seeing and are emerging in their paddocks.

Examples of plants potentially toxic to livestock include:
✅ Pimelea
✅ Flatw**d
✅ St John's Wort
✅ Common and blue heliotrope
✅ Paterson's curse

For more information about these and other plants, check out our dedicated webpage today 🔗 https://bit.ly/4r3uuRv

Prevent w**ds in feed spreading on your farm 🚜

Silage, hay and grain can be an important management tool, but it is also one of the most common ways new w**ds and pests are introduced onto farms.

Taking a few simple precautions before purchasing feed can help protect both livestock and pastures into the future.

✅ request a commodity vendor declaration (CVD)
✅ ask questions about any known w**d or pest issues on the source property
✅ feed imported fodder in a designated containment paddock to limit the spread of any potential biosecurity concerns
✅ inspect feed on arrival
✅ keep good records.

As NSW continues its response to H5 bird flu, now is the time to review your biosecurity practices and help protect your backyard birds.

Good biosecurity is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of disease in your flock:

🐓 Keep feed and water sources away from wild birds
🦆 Prevent contact between wild and domestic birds using netting or fencing
🦃 Clean and disinfect bird housing, feeders and drinkers regularly
🐤 Quarantine new birds before introducing them to your flock
🐭 Store feed securely to prevent contamination from pests

Know the signs of H5 bird flu:

• Sudden death
• Lethargy or reduced activity
• Swelling around the head and neck
• Coughing or nasal discharge
• A sudden drop in egg production

If you notice any signs of disease or unexplained deaths in your birds, report it immediately to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

Protect your flock. Protect NSW's bird health.
