Coercive control is when someone repeatedly hurts, scares or isolates another person to control them. It can include emotional, psychological, financial or social abuse. It can be difficult to recognise and often develops gradually over time.

The NSW coercive control offence has been in effect since 1 July 2024 and was introduced to strengthen the criminal justice response to non-physical forms of domestic abuse.

Your feedback will help us understand how the law is working and whether parts of it should be changed in the future.
