Tallowood Mountain Rail Trail

Tallowood Mountain Rail Trail AND bringing to life the 148yr old steam train 1919 at Glenreagh! Tallowood Ventures Limited (TVL) is a not-for-profit company set up in November 2022.

Transforming the historic, disused 35km rail corridor from Ulong to Glenreagh in the glorious Orara Valley into a world-class rail trail tourist attraction for everyone to enjoy. In March 2023, the company acquired all the assets of Glenreagh Mountain Railway (GMR). This includes the rail corridor and all the sheds, engines, carriages and stations previously owned by GMR. TVL proposes building a c

ycling and walking track along the defunct section of the Glenreagh to Ulong rail corridor. This rail trail will be 35 kilometres long, pass from the Dorrigo Plateau down to the coastal plain and traverse a section of the proposed Great Koala National Park. The villages of Ulong and Lowanna sit at the southern end of the proposed rail trail, while Glenreagh sits at the northern. TVL is also planning to run rail projects using the famous 1919 steam engine and carriages on the Glenreagh section of the rail corridor as well as up at the Ulong/Lowanna section of the corridor. TVL is run by a professional Board with two members from GMR, two members from the Woolgoolga Mountain Bike Club with an independent Chairman with more than 25 years’ experience running companies and Boards. We have had community meetings at Ulong, Glenreagh and Dorrigo and interest has been positive! Here is a link to the community consultation. COMMUNITY CONSULTATION FB July23.pdf

Thank you so much to all of our volunteers who came out to our working bee at Glenreagh Heritage Railway yesterday.

The sunshine was very welcome, making it a great morning to:
🌿- maintain the rail corridor clearing weeds and fallen trees,
πŸ›€οΈ- install plaques onto the sleepers,
πŸͺ- remove railway spikes in preparation for replacing new sleepers
πŸ–ŒοΈ - paint the picket fence and posts in front of the shed.

There is a lot more work to do before the steam train and carriage can get up and running!
Please help out and volunteer if you can, or donate to our GoFundme:

β€˜I live in a small village close to the Rail Trail and I can’t thank those enough that fought for, designed, advocated and made this life changing infrastructure a reality. The last few years have been very tough on the Northern Rivers and without our daily walks, runs or cycles on this gorgeous safe Rail Trail many of us seniors, singles, couples, friends and young families would not be able to get out, exercise, say hi to each other and experience nature.
My favourite times are in the early morning when I can greet an elderly gent out on his mobility scooter just checking out the everchanging scenes around our creeks or the young folk out for their peace filled morning jog. Our communities have benefitted from a wonderful influx of new faces daily, only those that live here would understand how important this is and what joy this gives us. Yes public transport certainly needs improving, get electric buses and our roads sorted but let’s get the rest of the 74 km of this brilliant trail done! Thankyou . β€˜ πŸ™β™₯️

Great news for the Northern Rivers Rail Trail!

Great news for the Northern Rivers Rail Trail!

πŸŽ‰ A huge step forward for the Northern Rivers Rail Trail! πŸŽ‰

Byron Shire Councillors voted this morning to proceed with the planning, design and implementation of an 'on-formation' rail trail for the entire length of the rail corridor within the Byron Shire. πŸš²πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘©β€πŸ¦½β€βž‘οΈπŸ€ΈπŸ¦½πŸ›΄

For many years, progress on developing the missing central 60km of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail has been held back by a 2023 Council resolution to only support a 'rail with trail' for the section of the disused corridor between Byron Bay and Mullumbimby, following pressure from groups who - unrealistically - wanted trains to return to the corridor.

However, there is insufficient space for a double configuration and the costs would be enormous. By using the existing formation, a much simpler trail can be constructed, while preserving the rail corridor alignment if trains do become viable again in the future.

Now that a clear path forward has been agreed, Byron Shire Council can get on with winning the grants that will finally allow construction to begin.

Bicycle NSW CEO Peter McLean spoke at the council meeting:

"The Northern Rivers Rail Trail is an incredible success story - the best in NSW and slowly becoming the best in Australia.

"What we need is this missing link, which will increase visitation, create wonderful recreational opportunities for local communities, and benefit the entire Northern Rivers region."

A huge thanks to everyone who has campaigned for this significant win. We can't wait to ride the whole way from Casino to Murwillumbah!
