The Gurindji Strike, also known as the Wave Hill Walk-Off, began on 23 August 1966 when Gurindji leader Vincent Lingiari led around 200 Aboriginal stockmen, domestic workers and their families off Wave Hill Station in the Northern Territory. The strike was initially a protest against poor wages, harsh working conditions and discrimination experienced by Aboriginal workers. It soon developed into a broader campaign for Aboriginal land rights, as the Gurindji people demanded the return of their traditional lands. After nine years of campaigning, the movement achieved a historic victory when Prime Minister Gough Whitlam handed back part of the Gurindji's traditional land at Daguragu (Wattie Creek) in 1975. The strike became a defining moment in Australia's land rights movement and helped pave the way for future Indigenous land rights legislation.

The anniversary of the Gurindji Strike is an important opportunity to honour the courage, resilience and leadership of Vincent Lingiari and the Gurindji people. Each year, it reminds Australians of the struggle for fair treatment, self-determination and land rights for Aboriginal peoples. The legacy of the 1966 walk-off continues to inspire communities across the nation, highlighting the importance of justice, equality and respect for Aboriginal peoples and their connection to Country.
