Our aims are:

•To promote public awareness of their plight in the wild
•To educate the community about the importance of the conservation of our unique Australian native animals and plants. Many of the animals at the sanctuary are native to the Merimbula area. We have Long-nosed Potoroos, Macropods such as Eastern Grey Kangaroos and Wallabies, and two Bare-nosed Wombats. Emus and even Dingoes can be found in the surrounding area. Koalas and Long-nosed Potoroos are very rare here now, but were once abundant. People come from all over the world to Australia to see our native animals!

As things slow down over winter, the work behind the scenes doesn’t.

Every animal still needs feeding, care, and a safe place to land.

When you buy a yearly pass this May, you’re directly supporting that work, helping us stay open, keep going, and care for every animal that calls the sanctuary home.

Unlimited visits. Half price. One small action that makes a real difference. Book your annual pass on our website ❤️🐨

This Christmas, one small echidna is celebrating something very simple — being alive.

Meroo was found after a devastating dog attack, badly injured and with one tiny foot so damaged it had to be amputated. After surgery, vets knew he could never survive alone in the wild again.

At Potoroo Palace, Meroo found safety and a new family.
Today, he confidently shuffles around his habitat with his echidna companion Precilla, digs for treats, and meet visitors of all ages. Children especially adore him, leaving inspired to protect wildlife. 💛

Sadly, not every animal gets the second chance Meroo did.

Across Australia, native wildlife is pushed to the brink by cars, feral animals, habitat loss, and extreme weather. Echidnas, one of only five egg-laying mammals left on Earth, are increasingly arriving injured, orphaned, or displaced. Sanctuaries like ours are often their last lifeline.

This Christmas, we urgently need your support.
Your donation helps provide food, medical care, safe enclosures, and dedicated care for animals like Meroo, through the holidays and beyond.

And this year, your impact is doubled.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of Alexandra Seddon, every Christmas donation will be matched dollar for dollar, helping twice as many animals receive the care and safety they need.

$50 helps feed animals like Meroo
$250 provides urgent veterinary care
$1,000 supports safe, permanent habitats for animals who can’t return to the wild

Without support, we face the heartbreaking reality of turning animals away. With your matched gift, no matter the size, you give wildlife another chance at life.

💚 Please donate today and help ensure the next injured echidna gets the second chance Meroo did.

This adorable rufous bettong is having a sleep in the CUTEST position! But did you know their sleeping habits are just as fascinating as they are?

Rufous bettongs construct cozy nests from grass and other vegetations. They use their prehensile tail like a hand to carry nesting materials! And they don't stick to one nest, they build multiple sleeping spots throughout their territory and rotate between them.

To mimic their natural nest-building behavior, we always provide fresh straw and hay for our bettongs. This allows them to constantly build new nests just like they would in the wild.

Today, we had to say goodbye to Ozi, our beloved magpie goose, who had been part of Potoroo Palace for over 25 years.

When Alexandra first found Ozi, she had deformed feet, and as she grew older, arthritis affected her wings. Despite her health challenges, she was carefully medicated every day so she could live as happily and comfortably as possible.

Ozi had an unforgettable personality. When she was with other geese, she became the fearless protector, ready to defend her friends from humans, sometimes even with a bit of a bite! She was always on guard, showing a loyalty and courage that left a strong impression on everyone. Yet, when she was on her own, her character completely shifted, she became gentle, affectionate, and loving toward people, revealing a sweet and trusting side that only a few got to see.

Her behaviour reminds us of the complexity of animals, the ways they bond, protect, and adapt to those around them. Ozi will be remembered for her bravery, her loyalty, and the love she gave only to those she deemed worthy.

We are grateful to have shared her life and will carry her memory with us forever.
