Thank you to everyone who joined us at the South Riana Memorial Hall in May for a Community Conversation.

It was a valuable morning discussing local issues, ideas and opportunities with residents, and hearing directly about what matters to the South Riana community.

Some of the key topics discussed included:

🚧 Road safety and visibility – particularly the intersection near the South Riana Memorial Hall
🪧 Local signage and wayfinding – including signage around South Riana and the South Riana Dam
🚻 Community facilities – including the South Riana Memorial Hall and nearby facilities
🚶 Footpath connections – future opportunities for safer walking links

There was also strong appreciation for the recent sealing of the South Riana Memorial Hall car park, which residents said has made a real difference for the hall, school bus users and the wider community.

Thank you to everyone who came along, asked questions and shared their local knowledge, and a special shout out to South Riana community for the incredible and creative catering!

🧡 Celebrating 50 years of SES in Tasmania

This year marks 50 years of the Tasmanian State Emergency Service, and we’re taking the opportunity to recognise the volunteers of Ulverstone SES.

For five decades, Tasmania SES volunteers have responded in some of the toughest conditions, supporting communities through storms, floods, rescues and emergencies.

Locally, Ulverstone SES continues that proud tradition, with volunteers giving their time, skill and energy to train, prepare and respond when they are needed most.

Mayor Cheryl Fuller was delighted to visit the Ulverstone unit recently and see their new road crash rescue training trailer in action.

The trailer was made possible thanks to the Apex Club of Ulverstone, with support from Central Coast Council, and will help local SES volunteers continue building important rescue skills.

Thank you to the volunteers of Ulverstone SES for your service, commitment and contribution to our community.

If you’ve passed through Ulverstone this week, you may have already noticed a new sign in town.

This week marks 12 months since Constable Keith Smith was taken from us here in Ulverstone. In honour of his service, the laneway between Victoria and King Edward Streets has been named Keith Smith Lane.

It’s a lane many people will know, connecting the Ulverstone Police Station with nearby eateries and coffee shops, and it’s a stretch Keith travelled often.

A name known and loved by his family, colleagues and friends will now be forever known in this place.

Next time you’re in town, we encourage you to take a moment to find the sign and reflect on Keith’s service, and the work of our local Tasmania Police officers who serve our community each day.

Reibey Street night works 💡

Council will be replacing two street light poles on Reibey Street, Ulverstone, near the King Edward Street intersection.

Works are scheduled for Monday 22 June, from 9.30pm to approximately 1.00am. The work has been scheduled at night to help minimise disruption to businesses, road users and pedestrians.

Traffic management will be in place while works are underway, and westbound traffic may be temporarily affected.

Please follow all traffic signs and directions from traffic controllers.

They’re Council’s regular in-person sessions where community members can meet with Councillors and Council staff to ask questions, raise local issues and share ideas.

We’re reviewing how these sessions work and want to understand what works well, what could be improved and what would make people more likely to take part.

Today at the Central Coast Community Safety Partnership Committee meeting, Cr Amanda Diprose presented Community Safety Champion Certificates of Appreciation to Ninh Pham, Alec Newton and Callum Hodge.

The certificates recognise the life-saving role they played during an incident at the mouth of the Leven River earlier this year, when a 74-year-old man became separated from his boat and was swept into dangerous conditions.

Recognising that something was wrong, Ninh immediately called emergency services after the man disappeared from view. Shortly after, Alec and Callum arrived at the boat ramp, learned someone was missing, and launched their boat to search the area.

They located the man around 500 metres beyond the river mouth, brought him aboard, provided immediate assistance and returned him safely to shore, where emergency responders were waiting.

Their actions reflect the very best qualities of our community: awareness, courage, initiative and a willingness to act when someone else’s life depended on it.

Please join us in congratulating Ninh, Alec and Callum, and thanking them for their outstanding contribution to community safety.

📢 Midway Beach Campground – Seasonal Closure

Please note that the Midway Beach Campground is now closed for overnight stays until further notice.

This seasonal closure helps protect the area during the wetter months and gives our team the chance to carry out important maintenance.

We appreciate your understanding and look forward to welcoming campers back once conditions improve. 🌱🏕️

Today Tasmania Police will honour the memory of fallen officer, Constable Keith Smith.

On the 12-month anniversary of Keith’s tragic death, members of Tasmania Police, his family and loved ones, and the broader community will gather in Ulverstone - his home - for a memorial event.

Tasmania Police Commissioner Donna Adams said today’s memorial service would bring together Keith’s family, friends and colleagues and give them a safe and supportive space to remember a man who gave so much to his community.

“Today marks one year since we lost Constable Keith Smith. And while a year has passed, for many of us, time has not softened the loss,” Commissioner Adams said.

“Today is not only a time to remember how we lost Keith. It is a time to remember how he lived… a 25-year career built not on recognition, but on reliability, on doing the job properly, and on treating people with dignity, even in the most difficult circumstances.

“Our thoughts remain with Keith’s family, loved ones, friends, colleagues and the wider blue family. With honour he served, and with honour his legacy will live on.”

Members of the public are also advised that a one minute's silence will be observed by police officers statewide at 11am, with police vehicles having emergency lights (no siren) activated for the duration.
