Europe cannot become a real power by postponing the debate on how to become one.

Once again, the European Council has pushed a serious discussion on EU reform into the future — as if time were on our side.

But Europe’s challenges will not wait until October: war on our borders, global instability, economic competition, democratic threats and the need for a common defence demand decisions now.

If the EU wants to act as a real power, it needs stronger democratic institutions, more common competences, an end to national vetoes, a stronger European Parliament, and a Commission able to act as a true European executive.

Europe does not lack declarations.
It lacks political will.

No more delays. No more excuses. Treaty reform must start now.

This war did not start in Moscow.
It started with Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine.

Every explosion, every escalation, every life lost is a consequence of Putin’s war of aggression.

Europe must remain united: support Ukraine for as long as it takes, strengthen European defence, and build the political Union capable of protecting peace, democracy and freedom.

The only way to end this war is clear: Russia must stop the invasion and withdraw from Ukraine.

🇪🇺 June 18, 1989: Italy voted for a Federal Europe.

On that day, alongside the European elections, Italians were asked to express their view on a historic question: transforming the European Communities into a true Union, with a government accountable to the European Parliament, and giving Parliament the mandate to draft a European Constitution.

The result was overwhelming: 29,158,656 YES votes, equal to 88.03% of valid votes, against 3,964,086 NO votes. Turnout reached around 80.7%. It was the first — and so far only — national advisory referendum in the history of the Italian Republic.

As The Federalist wrote in 1989, the referendum carried enormous political and historical meaning: for the first time, the Italian state solemnly declared its willingness to transfer part of its national sovereignty to a wider federal European Union.

A forgotten but fundamental page in European democracy.

Italians voted YES to a Federal Europe.
The question is: when will we finally build it?

The draft Iran-US MOU is not a peace framework. It is a dangerous strategic imbalance.

The United States gains a temporary de-escalation, a political declaration from Tehran, and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran, however, receives immediate and concrete concessions: sanctions relief, oil export waivers, access to frozen assets, a $300 billion rehabilitation plan, and reduced US military pressure.

Most importantly, Iran is not required to immediately roll back its nuclear programme or dismantle its missile infrastructure. Its underground missile cities remain intact, while Europe is left outside the negotiation and potentially without a real snapback mechanism.

AI sovereignty is no longer an abstract debate.

The United States can restrict access to frontier models.
China can keep strategic AI talent under state control.
Europe, meanwhile, says it wants sovereign AI — but its infrastructure still needs to be built.

That is why European digital sovereignty cannot stop at regulation.
It requires European cloud infrastructure, sovereign data storage, public procurement that supports Europe-based providers, and a clear migration of public institutions toward secure, GDPR-compliant European alternatives.

As UEF argues in its resolution “European Digital Sovereignty Now”, dependence on non-European digital infrastructures is not just a technical or economic issue: it is a question of security, rule of law and political autonomy.

No sovereign AI without sovereign infrastructure.

The Union of European Federalists (UEF) and the Young European Federalists (JEF Europe) have adopted a Joint Declaration reaffirming their shared commitment to strengthening cooperation in pursuit of a European Federation and, ultimately, a democratic World Federation.

The declaration builds on the long-standing partnership between the two organisations, united by a common federalist vision and by the conviction that the major challenges of our time—from war and geopolitical instability to climate change and democratic backsliding—require democratic governance beyond the nation-state.

At a time when Europe faces unprecedented security, economic and political pressures, UEF and JEF Europe stress the need for a stronger, more democratic and more sovereign European Union, capable of acting effectively both internally and on the global stage. The declaration highlights the importance of federalism as the political framework best suited to guarantee peace, democracy, the rule of law and solidarity among peoples.

The two organisations also recognise that global challenges increasingly transcend national and continental borders. For this reason, the declaration reaffirms support for the gradual development of democratic global governance structures and for closer cooperation with the worldwide federalist movement, with the long-term objective of building a World Federation based on democracy, human rights and the rule of law.

The Joint Declaration commits UEF and JEF Europe to intensify their cooperation through common campaigns, advocacy initiatives, political action and educational activities. It also underlines the importance of engaging new generations of Europeans in the federalist cause and strengthening the federalist movement at local, national, European and global levels.

As the federalist movement approaches the eightieth anniversary of the founding of the UEF, this declaration sends a clear message: the pursuit of a united, democratic and federal Europe remains inseparable from the broader aspiration for a more peaceful, just and democratic world order.

In March, *The Federalist Posters Series* by was presented at the XXIX UEF European Congress in Barcelona, hosted in the historic Royal Hall of the Palau Reial de Pedralbes, as part of the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Union of European Federalists.

The exhibition provided a visual and cultural backdrop to discussions on the future of Europe, the federalist movement, and the ideas that continue to inspire a shared European vision. Through images, symbols, and narratives, the series invited participants to reflect on the values of unity, democracy, and solidarity that remain at the heart of the European project.

A special thank you to the Palau Reial de Pedralbes for making this remarkable venue available, to the City of Barcelona and the Government of Catalonia for their support, to Federalistes d'Esquerres (UEF Catalunya) for their invaluable collaboration, and to photographer José Luis Pepe for capturing these moments.

The series is available in exchange for a donation through UEF.

“We are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us.”

Ten years after the murder of Jo Cox, we remember a woman who dedicated her life to defending democracy, solidarity, and cooperation among Europe’s peoples.

Murdered by a far-right extremist on 16 June 2016, just days before the Brexit referendum, Jo Cox warned of the dangers posed by nationalism and a politics built on fear and division.

Her message remains as relevant today as ever: the great challenges of the 21st century do not stop at national borders and require common solutions. That is why we need a Europe that is more united, more democratic, and more capable of acting as a true political community.

Remembering Jo Cox means carrying forward her legacy and continuing to build a European future founded on peace, solidarity, and the conviction that what unites us is stronger than what divides us.
