🌡️ More than 50,000 lives lost. In just one summer.

Researchers estimate that extreme heat caused over 50,000 deaths across 854 European urban areas during summer 2026—the highest summer toll since 2000 in the areas studied. Around two-thirds were attributed to human-induced climate change.

These are modelled estimates, not a count of death certificates listing heat as the cause. But behind the numbers are people, families and communities facing a growing threat.

Protecting lives requires action: greener cities, cooler homes, accessible drinking water, heat-health warning systems and hospitals prepared for extreme temperatures. Older people, outdoor workers and those living in poorly insulated housing need particular protection.

🇪🇺 Europe needs a coordinated response, with common resources to help communities adapt and sustained cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. Citizens’ protection should not depend on their postcode or their municipality’s budget.

Summer is over. The responsibility to prepare for the next one is not.

🇪🇺🇺🇸 Europeans are watching the US midterm elections. But can Europe’s future depend on who wins across the Atlantic?

According to the Polling Europe survey presented here, 58% of respondents across the EU27 hope for a Democratic Party victory, compared with 18% who favour the Republicans. Another 24% choose neither. These figures measure Europeans’ preferences—not voting intentions in the United States or a forecast of the result.

The national breakdown reveals important differences. Support for a Democratic victory reaches 64% in Italy and 60% in Germany, compared with 58% in France and Spain and 43% in Poland. Across all the political group electorates shown, more respondents favour a Democratic victory than a Republican one, although the gap varies considerably.

For European federalists, these findings raise a broader question: how much longer should Europeans have to look abroad for decisions that shape their security and prosperity?

A strong transatlantic partnership matters. It should bring together partners capable of taking responsibility, contributing to shared security and defending democracy.

Europe must develop that capacity itself. Common defence, a coherent foreign policy, shared resources and democratic federal institutions would allow Europeans to make decisions together and act on them.

Whatever American voters decide, our responsibility remains the same: to build a Europe capable of protecting its citizens, supporting its partners and shaping its own future.

Your decision to step down on 7 February 2027 allows the succession process to begin ahead of France’s presidential election—a significant moment for Europe’s institutional continuity.

For European federalists, the ECB represents one of the most advanced expressions of federal integration: a common institution exercising shared sovereignty beyond national borders. Its independence must be protected, whoever holds office in any Member State.

Europe now needs to match its monetary union with a democratic fiscal and political union.

🇪🇺 A common European defence needs shared capabilities, effective decision-making and democratic accountability.

On 27 October in Brussels, the Action Committee for the United States of Europe met European Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius at his invitation.

The Committee presented concrete proposals: directing at least 50% of national defence investment towards joint European programmes, strengthening common command structures and progressively developing a permanent European force complementary to national armies.

These measures must be accompanied by common financing, stronger European Parliament oversight and, in the longer term, Treaty reform towards a European federation with a common defence.

The challenge now is to turn these proposals into operational capabilities and institutions accountable to citizens.

Could Arab parties hold the key to Israel’s next government?

Provisional results put Netanyahu’s bloc at 53 seats and the Eisenkot-led opposition at 48 — both short of the 61 needed for a majority.

With 19 seats, Arab-led parties could provide decisive support for an alternative government. Together with Eisenkot’s bloc, they would hold 67 seats. But parliamentary arithmetic is only the beginning: deep political divisions and resistance to cooperation remain major obstacles.

An alliance between Arab-led and Zionist parties could mark a major political turning point, bringing unresolved questions to the negotiating table: equal citizenship, the relationship between Israel’s Jewish and democratic identity, and the future of Israeli-Palestinian relations.

As vote counting continues, could a parliamentary majority become the basis for a broader political transformation?

With just seven days until the US midterm elections, that question deserves renewed attention — on both sides of the Atlantic.

For us, European federalists, the lesson also applies at home. We cannot take democracy for granted or assume that Europe’s promise of peace, freedom and equality will fulfil itself.

We need independent journalism, informed citizens and institutions that make power accountable. And we need a federal Europe capable of defending its values, taking responsibility for its security and acting together in the world.

America’s choices matter to Europe. Building Europe’s capacity to act is our responsibility.
