🇪🇺 Happy 40th Anniversary, EU Flag!

Forty years ago today, on 29 May 1986, the European flag was officially raised in front of the European Commission in Brussels.

Since then, its twelve golden stars on a blue background have become a symbol of unity, peace, democracy and solidarity among the peoples of Europe.

Today, as Europe faces new challenges, the values embodied by our flag remain as relevant as ever. More than a symbol of what Europe is, it represents what Europe can become: stronger, more united and more democratic.

Happy Birthday, EU Flag. May your stars continue to guide Europe towards an ever closer union. 🇪🇺✨

🇷🇴🇪🇺 Last night, a Russian drone struck a residential building in Galați, Romania. Two people were injured and dozens were forced to leave their homes.

Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and all those affected by this attack.

As highlighted by Simina Tulbure, President of UEF Romania and member of the UEF Executive Bureau, this incident reminds us that threats to European citizens do not stop at national borders. When a Romanian city is hit, the security of all Europeans is challenged.

Europe cannot rely forever on fragmented national responses. It needs a common defence, integrated air protection systems, shared military capabilities and a unified command structure capable of acting rapidly when European citizens are under threat.

The attack on Galați is another reminder that security in the 21st century requires European solutions. A stronger, federal Europe would be better equipped to protect its citizens wherever they live.

Our solidarity goes to the people of Galați.

A safer Europe requires a united Europe.

🇪🇺 A historic signal from Spain for the future of Europe.

The Spanish Congress of Deputies has declared Spain’s membership in the European Union irrevocable and expressed its support for EU Treaty reform — a strong political message in favour of a more sovereign, democratic and effective Europe.

At a time of growing geopolitical challenges, this vote reinforces the need to move forward with deeper European integration and stronger common institutions.

🗣️ Domènec Ruiz Devesa, UEF President: "We congratulate the Spanish Congress of Deputies for this forward-looking resolution. At a time when the European project needs friends who speak clearly, Spain has done so. We hope other national parliaments will follow this example in supporting the proposal to reform the Treaties"

🤝 Francisco Aldecoa , President of the CFEME: "The European Movement has worked for decades to make European integration irreversible not just in law but in the hearts and minds of citizens. This resolution is a step in that direction, and we encourage the Government to give it the fullest possible effect."

Europe moves forward when citizens, civil society and political institutions work together.

“When we last discussed how the European Union should function was 25 years ago. It was a very different world.”

During the debate on “EU governance under pressure – institutional responses to global challenges”, Spinelli Group member Daniel Freund delivered a powerful reminder: Europe cannot face today’s geopolitical challenges with yesterday’s institutional structures.

The world has changed dramatically. War has returned to Europe, authoritarian powers are gaining influence, and unanimity too often prevents the European Union from acting decisively when unity is most needed.

Citizens understand that Europe must become stronger, more democratic, and more capable of acting together. Yet while support for reform is growing, political courage from national governments remains too weak.

As Daniel Freund underlined, Europe cannot continue ignoring proposals for Treaty reform and institutional change. Debate cannot be postponed forever while Europe’s ability to act is increasingly challenged by global instability and internal paralysis.

The future of Europe depends on our willingness to reform it. 🇪🇺

Forty years after the death of Altiero Spinelli, President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella paid tribute to one of the founding fathers of a united and federal Europe with a powerful and deeply meaningful declaration.

Remembering Spinelli as “a free spirit” and a tireless advocate for democracy, freedom, and European unity, President Mattarella highlighted the enduring relevance of the vision born in Ventotene: a Europe capable of overcoming nationalism, war, and division through political integration and supranational democracy.

From the Ventotene Manifesto to the “Spinelli Plan”, Altiero Spinelli dedicated his entire life to the construction of a federal Europe founded on peace, solidarity, and democratic values. His political courage and intellectual legacy continue to inspire generations of Europeans committed to strengthening the European project.

The Union of European Federalists warmly welcomes and deeply appreciates this important declaration by President Mattarella honouring Altiero Spinelli, co-founder of the UEF and one of the most influential architects of European integration.

At a time when Europe faces war, geopolitical instability, and growing challenges to democracy, Spinelli’s message remains more relevant than ever: European unity is not only an aspiration — it is a necessity.

His legacy lives on in all those who continue to work for a stronger, more democratic, and truly federal Europe. 🇪🇺

Forty years after the death of Altiero Spinelli, his vision for a united, democratic, and federal Europe remains more relevant than ever.

A founding father of European federalism, Spinelli understood that peace, freedom, and democracy in Europe could only be secured through deeper political unity. From the Ventotene Manifesto to the European Parliament, he dedicated his life to building a Europe capable of overcoming nationalism and division.

Today, as Europe faces war on its borders, geopolitical instability, democratic challenges, and growing global uncertainty, Spinelli’s message continues to guide us:

“The road to pursue is not easy nor is it safe. But it must be pursued, and it will be.”

His legacy reminds us that European integration is not inevitable — it is a political choice that requires courage, vision, and determination.

Honouring Altiero Spinelli means continuing the fight for a stronger, more democratic, and more united Europe. 🇪🇺
