COMMUNITY NOTICE: PET SAFETY ALERT FOR UPCOMING BREAST CANCER AWARENESS WALK
The Akwesasne Compliance Department is reminding all residents and pet owners in the District of Kana:takon to ensure domestic animals are securely restrained and kept under direct control on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
🎗️ The MCA Department of Health will be hosting the annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk:
• Date: Saturday, October 17, 2026
• Start Time: 10:00 AM
• Route: Starting and finishing at the Kanonhkwa’tsheri:io Health Facility, looping through the village roads of Kana:takon.
Because a large gathering of community members, elders, families, and children will be walking through the village, loose or unrestrained dogs pose an immediate safety risk to participants.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF PET OWNERS
• Keep Dogs Secured: Under the Emergency Interim Dog Control Regulation, all dogs must be kept under control at all times. Please ensure your dogs are kept indoors, placed inside secure fenced yards, or properly leashed/tied away from pedestrian walkways along the walk route during this event.
• No Free-Roaming Animals: Allowing dogs to roam freely through neighborhoods or onto public grounds (including clinic areas and village roadways) constitutes an offence.
• Aggressive Dogs: Dogs exhibiting aggressive behavior must be securely restrained and prevented from having contact with the public to avoid dangerous biting or chasing incidents.
ENFORCEMENT & CONSEQUENCES OF NON-COMPLIANCE
Compliance Officers will be monitoring the area to protect event participants and community members:
• Legal & Financial Liability: Dog owners are strictly liable for any injury, property damage, or medical expenses caused by an uncontrolled dog. Victims may seek damages directly through the Akwesasne Mohawk Court.
• Fines & Citations: Violations under the Emergency Interim Dog Control Regulation and the Control of Dogs By-Law may result in citation tickets, court appearances, and fines.
• Seizure & Impoundment: Loose, unattended, or aggressive dogs encountered by Compliance Officers will be seized and transported a holding facility. Unclaimed animals are held for a maximum of four (4) days before being transferred or surrendered to the OSPCA.
