Kingston Police Warn Residents of Ongoing “Fake Bank Investigator” Scams

Kingston Police continue to receive reports of fraudsters posing as bank investigators, fraud department employees, or security staff from financial institutions.

Victims are often told there has been suspicious activity on their accounts and are directed to assist with an investigation by providing personal information, online banking credentials, or verification codes. In some cases, victims are convinced to surrender their bank cards, purchase gift cards, withdraw and mail cash, purchase gold or other precious metals, send e-transfers, or deposit money into cryptocurrency (Bitcoin) ATMs.

Remember: Financial institutions will never ask customers to provide passwords or verification codes, surrender bank cards, purchase gift cards or gold, mail cash, send e-transfers, or deposit funds into a Bitcoin ATM as part of an investigation.
• Never provide passwords or verification codes over the phone
• Do not click suspicious links in texts or emails
• Never install software at the request of an unsolicited caller
• Hang up and contact your bank directly

On September 21, 2026, officers responded to a residence after receiving a report of an individual who was prohibited from attending the location and was refusing to leave. The individual had resisted attempts to remove them from the home and began kicking at the door once outside.
Officers located the 28-year-old person from Kingston and after viewing further evidence, they were placed under arrest and charged with Assault x2, Mischief – destroys or damages property, and Unlawfully in a dwelling house. They were transported to the station and held in custody for a show cause bail hearing.

On September 16th, 2026, the Gananoque Police Service received a report of an altercation outside of a residence in the early evening hours. It was determined that an individual known to the complainant had threatened to kill them during a dispute.
As a result, a 35-year-old person from Gananoque was arrested and charged with Uttering threats – cause death. The accused was released on an undertaking with conditions.

On September 4th, 2026, officers received a report of a person going through a business dumpster. Upon arrival it was determined that the 59-year-old person from Gananoque was currently wanted on an arrest warrant. They were arrested and charged with Fail to comply with probation order and released on an appearance notice.

On September 2nd, 2026, an officer on patrol observed a vehicle bearing an expired license plate registered to a vehicle of a different make and model. Upon passing the officer, the vehicle parked at a nearby business. The officer attended and spoke to the occupants who were identified. It was determined that the driver was criminally suspended after being convicted of Impaired operation.
The 34-year-old person from Elgin was arrested and charged with Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code. They were released on an appearance notice and the vehicle was impounded for 45 days.

On August 21st, 2026, a 37-year-old person from Gananoque who was on charge for Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), Fail to comply with probation order x2, Mischief under $5,000 was to appear in court and failed to do so.
As a result, a bench warrant was issued by the court. On August 25th, 2026, the accused attended the station to turn themselves in. They were held in custody for a show cause bail hearing.
