A population number only tells part of Grande Prairie's story.

Grande Prairie is home to more than 70,000 people, but serves a trade area of nearly 300,000 across northwestern Alberta and northeastern British Columbia.

This regional market generates $4.7 billion in annual retail spending, with Grande Prairie serving as its primary hub for shopping, services, business and industry.

For retailers, service providers and businesses evaluating new markets, Grande Prairie offers access to a customer base significantly larger than its municipal population suggests.

🌲 National Forest Week: What does an Urban Forest Strategy look like in action?

Grande Prairie’s urban forest includes more than 25,000 trees and 500 shrub beds! A healthy urban forest helps create attractive neighbourhoods, commercial areas and public spaces, contributes to a community where people want to live and work, and supports the overall quality of place that helps cities attract residents, workers and investment.

It’s about looking beyond the next planting season and recognizing our urban forest as part of the infrastructure that supports Grande Prairie’s growth.

Because the trees we plant and protect today don’t just shape how our city looks tomorrow. They help shape the kind of community and economy we’re building for the future.

Our newsletter is here and we've got a question: Are tariffs changing how your business operates, buys, sells or plans for growth?

The Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI) is one of the supports available to eligible Prairie businesses looking to adapt, manage immediate pressures or diversify into new markets.

Tariffs and changing trade conditions are creating new pressures for businesses, from cash flow to supply chains and market access.

If changing trade conditions are affecting your business, we want to hear from you.
📩 Connect with Invest Grande Prairie at [email protected] and we can help connect you with PrairiesCan to explore available supports. Read our newsletter and learn more: https://ow.ly/KV3F50ZR87F

🌿 National Forest Week: A greener city is part of a growing city

Grande Prairie’s urban forest isn’t only about the environment. It also plays a role in how our community grows, attracts investment and creates places where people want to live and do business.

Healthy trees and green spaces can help manage stormwater, provide shade, reduce energy use and make properties and neighbourhoods more attractive. The City’s Urban Forest Strategy recognizes these environmental, social and economic benefits.

That matters as Grande Prairie continues to grow.

Economic development is about more than industrial land, infrastructure and access to markets. It’s also about building a community where businesses can attract employees, families want to put down roots and investment contributes to a strong, livable city.

Our Urban Forest Strategy is one piece of that bigger picture: planning today for a Grande Prairie that can continue to grow while remaining a great place to live, work and invest.

🌳 National Forest Week: Growing Grande Prairie’s Urban Forest

When we think about forests, we don’t always think about the trees along our streets, in our parks and throughout our neighbourhoods. But together, they make up Grande Prairie’s urban forest.

The City’s Urban Forest Strategy provides a long-term approach to managing, preserving and growing this important community asset.

Why do we need a strategy? In our northern climate, trees take years to mature, making the trees we already have especially valuable. Planning ahead helps us protect what we have while making thoughtful decisions about where and what we plant next.

This National Forest Week, we’re taking a closer look at Grande Prairie’s urban forest, how we’re caring for it and why it matters to the future of our growing city.
