Gyllian Porteous, Conservator (Archaeological Materials), is leading the conservation treatment of a unique pair of stained-glass panels from the historique maritime de la Pointe-au-Père. The panels were salvaged from the wreck of the “Empress of Ireland,” a legendary Canadian ocean liner. 🚢

Last year, we posted a before-treatment video as well as a video on the surprise discovery of uranium glass. Today, we present a reel on the treatment of the stained glass.

📍 OTTAWA, August 28, 2026 – Jennifer Poulin, Senior Conservation Scientist, and Mylène Choquette, Senior Scientific Documentation Technologist, explain to “Globe and Mail” journalist Kristy Kirkup how CCI helped crack the largest art fraud case in Canadian history.

❓ Did you know? Over several years, CCI scientists analyzed 26 paintings that are securely attributed to Norval Morrisseau and 30 seized paintings, which were found to have been forged. Thanks to our collaboration with the Ontario Provincial Police, the Thunder Bay Police Service and partner museums, our findings were pivotal in the arrests of eight people accused of selling artworks falsely attributed to Morrisseau. 🎨

Check out the “Globe and Mail” article to learn about the forensic techniques we used and the scientific evidence we provided to support the police investigation.

CCI is pleased to take part in the “Cultivating Sustainable Collections 2026” symposium, hosted by the Centre for Sustainable Curating at Western University in London, Ontario. This gathering is focused on advancing sustainable practices in collection management and preventive conservation. It addresses the urgent need for systemic change in how art galleries, libraries, archives and museums preserve collections in the face of the climate crisis.

Don’t miss the free pre-symposium vault and museum tours on September 11, 2026, and the two-day symposium on September 12 and 13, 2026. In-person spaces are limited!
