📢 Apply now for X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry services!

XRF spectrometers can be used to:
• determine the metal composition of heritage objects for common metals like iron, copper and aluminum
• determine the grades of precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum, as well as sculptural bronze
• detect low levels of environmental pollutants, including lead, arsenic and mercury
• identify pigment elemental compositions
• group fragments of objects from different locations together
• determine the composition of glass

We offer two services:
1) Full XRF spectrometry service: One of our conservation scientists will visit your site, for up to three days, to help you set up your analyses and provide a report on the results (includes optional training to become a certified XRF spectrometer operator).
2) XRF spectrometer loan service: Already certified? Borrow one of our spectrometers for up to a month! Free for eligible clients (shipping not included).

In this four-part series, we’ll share calls to action to explore how environmental, social and economic responsibility can support the long-term care and meaningful use of heritage collections.

The toolkit was designed to help gallery, library, archive and museum staff and managers design and implement digitization policies, programs and projects. Don’t miss the Still Image File Size Estimator Tool, which is an Excel workbook that helps determine the storage space requirements for images produced by scanning reflective and transparent still images. 💿

🍁 Heritage conservation ensures that veterans continue to be celebrated in museums across the country. Today, in honour of the brave Canadian soldiers who fought for us all on D-Day (June 6, 1944), we are highlighting our collaboration with the Army Museum at the Halifax Citadel. 🪖

Kathleen Sullivan, Archaeological Materials Conservator, is leading the conservation treatment of a Lee-Enfield No. 4 rifle found buried underwater at Juno Beach. When it was dropped, the rifle was still fully loaded, which makes this a very delicate and potentially dangerous project.

👀 WATCH this time-lapse video of Kathleen using tools, such as miniature pneumatic chisels and drills as well as scalpels, to meticulously chip away layers of concretion and extract the bullets, thus ensuring that the object is safe and stable for the rest of its treatment.
