Pender Island Public Library

Pender Island Public Library We are a dynamic and welcoming centre where all can learn, discover, explore and connect. This small ‘old library’ building now houses the local Youth Centre.

Free access is provided to a range of library resources to support the diverse needs of our community. History of the Pender Island Library

The Pender Island Public Library first came into being in November 1973, under the guidance of Marjorie Bailey and with the help of an enthusiastic group of colleagues. At this time the library was located in the back room of the Pender Island Community Churc

h and fondly called “The Pender Lender”. In 1976, the library moved to a building on the grounds of the Auchterlonie Centre, next to the Nu-To-Yu community thrift store. In around 1989 a group of far-sighted individuals, led by June Hall as Chairperson, laid the groundwork for what in 1991 became the new Pender Island Public Library building. This building was designed by local architect John Roberts. The building is one of which the residents of Pender Island are, justifiably, very proud. After 20 yrs of serving the community, and with much fundraising from generous local donors, the Library underwent extensive renovations in 2012. The newly renovated space now has a large dedicated youth section, a new front desk, and a welcoming and bright interior. The library services have grown over the years, to include programs for adults and youth and digital services, and aspires to continue to meet the needs of the local community.

The Library will re-open in June on a reduced schedule, with our doors open on Tuesdays and Fridays, from 10 am - 3 pm. Our Board of Trustees and staff would like to thank everyone for their generous support and kindness over the past weeks. Planning continues for resuming full operations in the future. We look forward to seeing you back at the Library, and a memorial guest book will be available for memories of Colette Clarke. Take care, Carmen Oleskevich, Library Director.

The Pender Island Public Library would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of Colette Helm Clarke, our lovely Library Technician of many years. We are very saddened by Colette’s sudden passing as she was a dear friend and one of the anchors that kept library services flowing smoothly to the community. The Library will be temporarily closed as we work through this difficult time, thank you for your understanding. The Library will reopen depending on our capacity.

Join March 26 and borrow 'Meet the Neighbors' by Brandon Keim on the Libby App with no waitlists or holds! What does the science of animal intelligence mean for how we understand and live with the wild creatures around us? In this wide-ranging, wonder-filled exploration of animals’ inner lives, Keim takes us into courtrooms and wildlife hospitals, under backyard decks and into deserts, to meet anew the wild creatures who populate our communities and the philosophers, rogue pest controllers, ecologists, wildlife doctors, and others who are reimagining our relationships to them.
