Today we honour legendary country music icon, actor, author, philanthropist and literacy advocate Dolly Parton. Over thirty years ago, Dolly started the Imagination Library for the children within her home county. Today, this program gifts millions of free books each month to children around the world. Dolly's impact cannot be overstated, and we celebrate her life and legacy.

We are well on our way to reaching the goal of raising $800,000 to fund the Library Renovation Project. With just under $180,000 left to raise, we continue to seek out relevant grant opportunities, but are also calling on local residents and businesses to help us cross the finish line!

Your contribution will help us fill the beautiful former Heartstrings building with all the furniture, fixtures and equipment we need to create an accessible, comfortable space for people of all ages and abilities. Browse the Town of Smithers post below for a peek at the vision for the interior design of the new library. We'd love to hear what you think!

Every donation to the Library Renovation Project—large or small—is eligible for a charitable tax receipt through the Friends of the Smithers Library via CanadaHelps: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/friends-of-the-smithers-library/

Together, we can make this vision a reality.

A local group has started a community street zine called the Bulkley Beat! This quarterly publication is intended to create a space for art, stories, poems, photos and reflections from folks across the Bulkley Valley with lived and living experience of homelessness, drug use, and mental health challenges.

The library is hosting a drop box for submissions, where folks can find more information about this new publication, which includes payment for work that is published. The submission deadline for the summer edition is August 1, 2026.
