With active evacuation orders and alerts across the province right now, it's a good time to make sure your family and property are ready for a wildfire emergency.

The Emergency Wildfire Preparedness Checklist outlines important steps to take, including packing a grab-and-go bag and completing simple tasks around your property.

Curious about our larger plans for treating greenspaces within and surrounding Tumbler Ridge?

Following the initial data collection for these prescriptions, greenspace in areas such as Valleyview Crescent, Willow Drive & Red Willow Avenue were determined to have a lower fuel loading or general risk level. Alternatively, due to their increased fuel loading or relation to residences, funding was prioritized to the below identified Fuel Treatment Units (FTU’s) for full mitigation, while the lower risk areas are planned to be managed through internal work or via coordinated volunteer efforts.

Check out the attached Fuel Treatment Unit Prescription Maps - these are currently submitted for review by the UBCM and once approved will be released for contractor bidding. The tentative target timeline for works to commence by fall 2026.

Happy to discuss any concerns or comments related to these prescriptions, or answer any questions that may be presented.

Are you...

Envious of your neighbours now brush-free & spacious backyard?

Tired of that same branch slapping your window every time the wind gusts?

Regretting not signing up for last weeks Community Chipping Event?

If this sounds like you - please reach out to the FireSmart team at [email protected] or 250-242-3939 ext. 704 to express interest in a second Community Chipping opportunity this summer or early fall.

Note - any falling of trees should be completed by a properly licensed and competent individual with necessary insurances, etc.

This chipper has a 24" diameter capacity - so there is limited opportunity for issues in terms of "too big". Please don't hesitate to reach out to discuss.

We are continuing to work behind Valleyview, as well as greenspaces along Murray Drive and Red Willow Avenue.

So far today British Columbia has had over 4,000 recorded lightning strikes. As of 4 p.m. the Coastal Fire Centre received 1,382 strikes, the Southeast Fire Centre received 1,326 strikes, and the Cariboo Fire Centre received 858 strikes. This has resulted in multiple new wildfire starts across the province. As the weather system makes its way into Alberta this afternoon and evening, we anticipate more lightning strikes, and in the coming days, more fire starts as we transition back to hot and dry conditions.

When aerial wildfire resources are operating in an area, please do not stop or slow traffic to watch. Pulling over in unsafe locations, slowing or stopping on roadways or gathering near active operations can create hazards for motorists, wildfire and emergency crews and aircraft. If you see wildfire aircraft flying overhead or collecting water from nearby lakes or reservoirs, please keep moving and give crews the space they need to work safely and effectively. Your cooperation helps support wildfire response efforts and keeps everyone safe.

Take a look at the BC Wildfire Service dashboard and view the interactive map for the most current and up-to-date information on activity in your area. For on-the-go access, you can download the official BC Wildfire Service app on the Apple App Store or Google Play.
