Dear neighbour,
𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘁𝘀.
Almost 77% of residents didn’t vote in the last municipal election in 2022. If you were one of them - then you didn’t have a say in the decision to raise your taxes by almost 20% in 4 years - almost double the rate of inflation.
Council looks to the same 23% of voters to re-elect them and feel emboldened to raise your property taxes at double the cost of living and spend your tax dollars on things like a $1 million dollar entrance and a $1.5 million concrete patio at Durham Region Headquarters.
I get it. You’re busy with work, family, and life in general. Provincial and federal elections is one thing but this is local politics and you haven’t followed what’s going on.
But this election is different. It affects your property tax bill.
Gas is up. Groceries are up. Mortgage rates are up. Rent is up. Utilities are up. All up dramatically. Tax arrears are through the roof. As are power of sales. I hear you. I’ve spoken directly to thousands of residents at the door. The number one issue raised by far is affordability and high property taxes.
𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗗𝗢?
Vote. Vote this October 26th so your voice is heard on council.
I’m running to be your next Local Councillor for East Ward 4. I’m not a career politician. This is the first time I’m running. And I, like you, was shocked after seeing how much my property taxes went up on my tax bill. My wife said, “instead of complaining - why don’t you do something about it”. And I thought, “You’re right”.
Residents raised rising property taxes as their number one concern. After 4 years of double inflation increases - I believe it’s my duty to give you a break to catch back up to the cost of living. That’s why I’m proposing something desperately needed; a two year freeze on the Town’s property tax. And I’ll only support reasonable increases that are the cost of living or below after that.
As a founder of a successful Whitby software company for over 16 years, I have the experience and budget analysis expertise to deliver on that two-year tax freeze - achieved through a public review of spending, recurring savings, and growth paying for growth, while protecting essential services.
The current councillor is a nice person but is responsible for voting for every tax increase the past 4 years - the largest hikes in over a decade. And last year council voted down a motion to put the question of creating an independent Auditor General before voters.
One of my top priorities is making council more accountable and transparent by supporting the implementing of an independent Auditor General.
