MANITOBA SCHOOL BOARDS ASSOCIATION WEIGHS IN ON BILL 51

MSBA highly values every opportunity to meet with our partners at the Manitoba Legislature, especially when the conversation pertains to protecting the best interests of students, staff, communities and local democracy.

The recent passage of Bill 51, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳 𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘊𝘺𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘎𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘈𝘤𝘵, marks an important step forward in our shared work on ensuring that the influence and administration of AI is well understood and regulated in our public education system with student safety as a top priority.

We look forward to further consultation and advocacy with and on behalf of our member boards as the regulations underpinning Bill 51 take shape in the coming months.

Thank you to the Honourable Mike Moroz, NDP MLA for River Heights , Minister of Innovation and New Technology and the Honourable Tracy Schmidt MLA for Rossmere, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Learning, for meeting this week with MSBA interim-President, Leah Klassen and MSBA’s new Director of Advocacy and Public Affairs, Alan M. PARTNERSHIPS MATTER TO SCHOOL BOARDS IN MANITOBA

Our sincere thanks to the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce for hosting another fantastic Ministers’ Dinner this week! In communities across our province, the important link between public education and the business community has never been more important, as Manitoba readies itself in the face of evolving socio-economic and geo-political challenges. The MCC Ministers’ Dinner provides an invaluable opportunity for networking and dialogue with leaders and decision makers in both the private sector and government. We look forward to the continued work of strengthening these relationships for the benefit of our students, families and communities.

JOSH WATT TO DEPART AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF MSBA

Effective July 8

The Manitoba School Boards Association extends its sincere thanks to Josh Watt for his outstanding leadership and service as Executive Director.

Since 2015, Josh has been a steady and thoughtful leader, championing public education and supporting school boards across Manitoba through periods of significant change. He strengthened advocacy efforts, enhanced governance supports, and built meaningful partnerships with government, education stakeholders, and First Nations, Métis and Inuit partners.

Josh helped guide Manitoba’s education system through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and played a key role in the response to Bill 64. His contributions have had a lasting and positive impact on students, educators, and school boards across the province.

We are deeply grateful for his dedication, vision, and commitment over the past decade. We wish Josh every success as he takes on his new role as Chief Electoral Officer for the Province of Manitoba.

MSBA will begin the process of recruiting a new Executive Director. In the interim, Chief Financial Officer Robyn Winters will serve as Interim Executive Director.

Thank you, Josh, for your service to public education in Manitoba.

🌈 Happy Pride Month 2026 🌈

Pride Month is a time to honour the 2SLGBTQ+ community, recognizing their history, contributions, and the ongoing work toward equity and inclusion across our province.

In Manitoba’s public schools, we are committed to nurturing a learning environment where every student and staff member feels safe, valued, and respected. Inclusion isn’t just a principle; it’s a daily practice that helps our classrooms and communities thrive.

Throughout June, we celebrate:

Authenticity — encouraging everyone to be their true selves
Belonging — ensuring our schools are welcoming spaces for all
Diversity — recognizing the strength that comes from our differences
Equity — standing together for fairness and dignity

Together, we continue building a future where everyone can learn, work, and grow without barriers.
