Our students participated in a beading workshop on Tuesday to honour and commemorate Orange Shirt Day and reflect on the meaning of Truth and Reconciliation. As always, our talented students created beautiful pieces that showcased their talent and dedication to learning and developing their beadwork skills.

Taking Charge! will be closed tomorrow, September 30th, for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We reflect on the legacy of residential schools in Canada and the work that still needs to be done on our journey of Truth and Reconciliation. We encourage our staff and participants to attend the many Orange Shirt Day events around the city, engage in meaningful discussions with family and friends, and reflect on the ongoing impacts of residential schools.

Orange Shirt Day events happening tomorrow!

In observance of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, the Assiniboine Park Conservancy will host a Sacred Fire in the Indigenous Peoples Garden at The Leaf to honour the resilience, strength and courage of Survivors of the Indian Residential School System.

Visitors are invited to join us around the fire from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm for a quiet moment of personal reflection or to engage with Indigenous educator Wayne Lalman, who will interact with visitors and share to***co teachings.

We are proud to support the important work of three Indigenous-led organizations through a minimum donation of $10,000, to be divided between the Orange Shirt Society, Ndinawemaaganag Endaawaad, and Indigenous Tourism Manitoba. The donation will consist of the following:

-15% of sales earned from admissions at The Leaf and Assiniboine Park Zoo on Wednesday, September 30.
-100% of orange lapel ribbon and pin donations: On Wednesday, September 30, orange lapel ribbons and pins will be offered to visitors with a suggested donation of $4. They will be available at The Leaf, the Fire Node in the Indigenous Peoples Garden, and the Zoo.
-100% of orange t-shirt sales: Orange t-shirts will be available for purchase at Wild Things Unique Gifts at the Zoo and The Leaf gift shop.

Orange Shirt Day events happening tomorrow!

JOIN US AT THE ORANGE SHIRT DAY HEALING WALK AND POW WOW: FREE EVENT OPEN TO EVERYONE

The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) invites you to join us for the 6th Annual Orange Shirt Day Healing Walk and Pow Wow on September 30, 2026, in Winnipeg on Treaty One Territory.

This FREE event takes place on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The day begins with an opening ceremony at 9:30 am at the Oodena Circle in The Forks.

Following the ceremony, we will take a healing walk to the Canada Life Centre.

Grand entry for the pow wow will take place at 1 pm.

Everyone is welcome.

Join us as we honour residential school Survivors, remember the children who never came home, and support healing for all affected families.

A big congratulations to Jess and everyone at Thrive Community Support Circle on the grand opening of their beautiful new building today! We were honoured to attend such a special day for a wonderful organization that offers so many programs for everyone in our community and look forward everything they will be able to do with their new space.

Our first ever Taking Charge! Alumni Club event was a success! Thank you to the former participants who came out to connect (or reconnect!) with us, with each other, and with Taking Charge! And as always, thank you to the amazingly talented Indigenuity - The Art of Heather A. Endall for guiding us on our art journey and being a wonderful part of our Taking Charge! community.

Today we were delighted to host Outreach Librarian Chris from the Winnipeg Public Library for a presentation on all the amazing things we can find at our local library! Several of our students were even able to get library cards issued to them on the spot, allowing them to start using the library right away.

Our outreach team has a new accessory thanks to our amazing facilitator and beading teacher Tara! Beading, crafting, and other creative pursuits are an important part of programming at Taking Charge!, allowing students to learn a practical skill while building community, connecting to culture, and experiencing the sense of accomplishment that comes with finishing a project.

We love to get feedback from staff at Employment and Income Assistance offices! Taking Charge! helps our participants complete or upgrade their education, enter the workplace or post-secondary education, and move on to self-sufficiency.

We need your help! Donate to Taking Charge! at https://takingcharge.org/make-a-donation/ to ensure we can provide new and returning students with school supplies, counselling, transportation, and all the other supports they need to graduate and move into their chosen career.

The new school year has begun, and the students in our Taking Charge! of Academics program started the year off right with these personalized organizers created by our Career Counsellor Amanda! These gorgeous agendas will help keep our students organized, motivated, and connected to their goals, their future, and their peers. Great job, Amanda, and a happy back to school season for students of all ages!
