[HONG KONG MEETS SLOVAKIA]

Celebrating Heritage: Hong Kong and Slovakia, Connected Through History and Culture 🤝

From Hong Kong’s historic neighbourhoods and living cultural landscapes to Slovakia’s UNESCO World Heritage sites: Our heritage tells stories that connect generations and bring people closer across borders. 🌏

Hong Kong is home to a number of heritage conservation projects recognised by UNESCO’s Asia-Pacific Awards, including Blue House, Tai Kwun, Yim Tin Tsai, The Mills and Lai Chi Wo. These projects show how history and traditions can be preserved while remaining part of vibrant communities today.

Slovakia boasts eight UNESCO World Heritage properties, from the historic town of Banská Štiavnica and the medieval Spišský Hrad to the unique village of Vlkolínec and the natural treasures of the Carpathians. 🏰🌿

Different landscapes. Different histories. But a shared commitment to protecting the past and celebrating culture.

Spanning 55 kilometers, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) is a massive achievement in modern engineering—and it shares a fascinating parallel with Central Europe's vital transit corridors. 🗺️

While both regions focus on dissolving geographic barriers to keep trade moving, their approaches reflect their unique landscapes.

🌉 Central Europe: Relies on strategic river and valley crossings—like the Monoštor Bridge over the Danube—to seamlessly link the neighbouring economies of Hungary and Slovakia.

🌊 The HZMB: Takes integration to a maritime scale, combining three cable-stayed bridges and a 6.7-km undersea tunnel to connect distinct jurisdictions across the Pearl River Delta.

Whether bridging major rivers or crossing deep sea lanes, both models prove that world-class infrastructure is the ultimate backbone for regional cooperation and economic growth.

[HUNGARY MEETS HONG KONG]

Trade figures at a glance 📈

Celebrating Hungary’s National Day!

Today is the National Day of Hungary. So let’s take a look on Hungary’s trade figures with Hong Kong!

In 2025, total trade between Hong Kong and Hungary reached an impressive 1.55 billion EUR. Key sectors driving this partnership include:
✅ Telecommunications equipment & parts
✅ Edible products and preparations
✅ Electric power machinery & parts

💡 What’s driving this growth?
Hong Kong continues to serve as the gateway to Asia for Hungarian businesses, offering a world-class financial hub, a simple and low-tax regime, and unparalleled connectivity to the Greater Bay Area and the Mainland.

At the same time, Hungary’s strategic location in Central Europe and its strong manufacturing base make it an attractive partner for Hong Kong companies looking to expand into the EU market.

🔮 Looking ahead
With both economies committed to innovation and trade liberalisation, we can expect even closer cooperation in areas like fintech, green technology, and logistics in the coming years.

📈The Hong Kong economy continued to expand robustly in the second quarter of 2026, underpinned by buoyant external trade and resilient domestic demand. Real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 4.3% in the second quarter over a year earlier. For the first half of 2026, real GDP grew by 5.1% over a year earlier, the strongest half-yearly performance in nearly five years. 📊

💡Looking ahead, the Hong Kong economy should see solid growth in the second half of 2026. The vibrant global demand for AI-related electronic products is expected to continue supporting Hong Kong’s merchandise trade performance, and related logistics services should benefit from this momentum as well.

Exports of services are also expected to benefit from sustained growth in visitor arrivals✈️, alongside steady demand for financial and business services in Hong Kong. Domestic demand is expected to stay firm, supported by stable labour market conditions, and solid business and consumer sentiment. 🛒🛍️

Taking into account the stronger-than-expected actual outturn in the first half of the year and the near-term outlook🔎, the real GDP growth forecast for 2026 as a whole is revised up to 3.5% to 4.5%, from 2.5% to 3.5% in the May round of review.

04/08/2026

💡To further protect the public interest, the Government's first-phase measures to enhance the regulation of licensed money lenders took effect on August 1 (Saturday), mainly covering:

• Prohibiting money lenders from requesting borrowers to provide loan referees
• Introducing "debt servicing ratio" caps to unsecured personal loans of low-income earners
With the above measures in place, money lenders can no longer request borrowers to provide loan referees, and members of the public need no longer worry about harassment arising from being a loan referee. Setting “debt servicing ratio” caps will not only protect the public but also encourage money lenders to grant loans more responsibly, helping to address the issue of excessive borrowing and promote healthy market development.

The second-phase measures will be rolled out on June 1 next year, including requiring all money lenders engaging in unsecured personal loan business to regularly submit personal credit information of their unsecured personal loan borrowers to the Credit Data Smart (CDS) and requiring money lenders that meet the specific requirements to join CDS to obtain personal credit information of borrowers for loan application assessment.
