The Zambian Embassy in the Federal Republic of Germany held the inaugural KK 11 Football Tournament on Saturday 16th May 2026, to commemorate and celebrate Kenneth Kaunda Day in honour of Zambia’s founding President, Dr Kenneth Kaunda.

Speaking at the function, Zambia’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany, H.E. Winnie Natala Chibesakunda noted that under Dr. Kaunda’s administration, football became more than just a game but became a bridge between communities, a force of national unity and a powerful expression of peace and togetherness.

She stressed that Dr. Kaunda should not only be remembered by words alone but through action by embracing the values he lived for, peace, patriotism, tolerance, and love for one another.

Ambassador Chibesakunda said even President Hakainde Hichilema has emphasised uniting Zambians through sports and called on Zambians to promote peaceful unity through sports.

She said Dr. Kaunda’s message of peaceful co-existence transcended Zambia’s borders and earned the country respect across Africa and around the world, adding that Dr. Kaunda recognised the power of sport, especially football, to unite the communities and inspire hope and strengthen national identity.

The Federal Republic of Germany has commended the Zambian government for notable development-oriented reforms.

Speaking during the official opening of the government-to-government negotiations on development cooperation between Zambia and Germany in Berlin on Wednesday, German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) Director General for Africa, Asia and Latin America, Ms. Christine Toetzke highlighted Zambia’s successful restructuring of its public debt and completion of the IMF program as a clear indication of the Zambian government’s determination to restore macroeconomic stability.

She further noted steps forward around good governance including implementation of the National Anti-Corruption Policy and further observed that the Zambian government has given high priority to the increase of sustainable agriculture production and made commendable efforts for the reform of the costly subsidy system (FISP).

Ms. Toetzke said the Zambian government has not only set ambitious targets for improving the food and nutrition security situation but has increased budget support to sectors like water resource management and improved access to water, sanitation and hygiene.

She assured that Germany is glad to remain a reliable partner of Zambia and believes that Zambia’s path for development-oriented reforms should be continued adding that the country’s strong democratic position makes it attractive for investment.

And Zambia’s Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and National Planning Mr. Mulele stressed that Germany is not merely a partner, but a vital strategic ally in its pursuit of sustainable and inclusive growth.

He emphasised that as Zambia pursues its economic transformation agenda, the country is shifting its focus from aid dependency towards a model of sustainable, mutually and beneficial cooperation.

And Zambia’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany, H.E. Winnie Natala Chibesakunda noted that Germany’s support to Zambia is a powerful statement of confidence in the country’s development path.

Zambia calls for more German investment

Zambia’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany Winnie Chibesakunda has pointed out that Zambia is actively creating conditions that enable enterprise to thrive, noting that sustainable economic expansion is not only driven by government alone but by dynamic business, innovation and investment.

Speaking on 5th May 2026 during the Business Day that was held on the margins of the German Zambian Government Negotiations in Berlin, Ambassador Chibesakunda said Zambia’s development strategy is firmly anchored in private sector led growth.

She said Zambia possesses vast arable land for agriculture and agribusiness, yet the true opportunity lies in processing, value addition and supply chain development, areas where German technology and innovation can help transform agriculture into a high value export driven sector.

Ambassador Chibesakunda stressed that in all these sectors, Zambia’s development priorities march Germany’s strengths in technology, engineering and long-term financing.

She underscored Zambia’s focus sectors, energy, mining and raw material processing, agribusiness and water as areas that offer significant and scalable opportunities for investment and collaboration.

And speaking at the same function, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and National Planning, Mr. Mulele Mulele said over the last few years, Zambia has demonstrated remarkable economic resilience, achieving an impressive average real GDP growth of 5.2 % over the last 5 years.

Mr. Mulele said this growth is not by chance but driven by focus on productive sectors adding that further, the Kwacha has stabilized, reflecting renewed international confidence in Zambia’s fiscal management and a strengthened, transparent banking sector.

He emphasised that Zambia is seeking high-quality capital investments to complement the government’s efforts of delivering sustainable economic development, adding that Zambia seeks partners that will invest both in capital and technology, for this will create the much-needed jobs for its people and foster capacity in local industries.

Mr. Mulele recognized Germany’s global leadership in engineering and renewable energy and on behalf of President Hakainde Hichilema invited Germany private sector companies to explore the vast business opportunities in Zambia adding that Zambia was ready to work with Germany for the mutual benefit of the two countries.

And German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) Director General for Bilateral Cooperation, Africa, Asia, and Latin America, Ms.Christine Toetzke, called on Zambia and Germany, through the business Day platform, to continue learning from each other and from examples of already established partnerships and to identify future opportunities for more economic partnerships.

The Zambia Development Agency(ZDA), led by Director General Mr. Albert Halwampa was the key player in the Business Day event.
