The global network of social-democratic, socialist and progressive parties

The Progressive Alliance is an association of progressive, social democratic, socialist and labour parties, political organisations and networks. The Progressive Alliance seeks to collaborate with other progressive organisations, unions, think tanks, foundations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Parallel and complementary to other associations operating at an international level, the Prog

ressive Alliance builds on regional and transnational networks and forums. The Progressive Alliance provides a platform for formulating progressive collective and coordinated answers to political challenges around the globe, for exchanging information and experience on election campaigns and policy initiatives and ideas, for strengthening party organization, supporting international campaigns, improving regional networking and for the solidarity activities.

"Our response should be real cooperation, based on trust and solidarity."

At the Election Camp 2026 of SSU, the Swedish Social Democratic Youth League, in Bommersvik, Progressive Alliance Global Coordinator Machris Cabreros joined Stefan Löfven, President of the Party of European Socialists and former Prime Minister of Sweden, for a panel on NATO, the EU and BRICS. The discussion was moderated by A***n Twana, International Leader of SSU.

Her argument: we are being pushed to choose sides in great power competition, and that framing displaces common security and global progress. Fragmentation is exposing the faultlines in democracy and multilateralism at the same time.

SSU put global cooperation at the centre of a domestic election camp, and asked the important questions about lived experiences and global solutions. Our thanks for the invitation.

🌹 Today in Adelaide, the Australian Labor Party opens its 50th National Conference — Labor's highest decision-making forum and Australia's largest political gathering.

More than 2,000 delegates, unionists, parliamentarians and supporters will spend three days debating and setting the direction of the movement and of the country. It is a genuine milestone: 135 years of the ALP, 125 years of Federal Labor in Parliament, and a government re-elected to a second term in May 2025.

A party built on trade union affiliation and a real connection to working people, returning to office with its largest win since the Second World War — a record progressives everywhere can learn from.

The Gender Equality Working Group (GWG) of the Progressive Alliance convened on 3 July with members from more than 34 countries to reflect on lessons from the 70th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) in New York and the Women Leaders Breakfast in Barcelona, exchange updates on current struggles and initiatives across regions, and set the direction for the annual Gender Equality Conference in Bangkok this November.

Participants reaffirmed that the global anti-gender backlash is not a cultural reaction. It is organised, coordinated, and financed. Across countries, the same playbook continues to undermine gender equality through delegitimisation, defunding, and disinformation, making stronger international coordination among progressive parties more urgent than ever.

The meeting also underscored that the rollback of women's rights is inseparable from the broader crisis of democracy. Across regions, feminist movements continue to defend democratic institutions, civic space, and equal participation, even in increasingly difficult political environments.

Looking ahead, the second half of 2026 will focus on shaping a collective response through regional coordination, exchanges of policies and practices, and continued collaboration as the Working Group prepares for the Progressive Alliance Gender Equality Conference in Bangkok under the theme "Building Power and Defending Progress Together.

Solidarity is not something we reserve for the easy times. It matters most in the difficult ones.

At the 32nd Congress of the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) in Skopje, Progressive Alliance Global Coordinator Machris Cabreros conveyed the solidarity of progressive parties from across the world and reaffirmed that the struggles for democracy, equality, and social justice are shared across borders.

In her remarks, she recognised the courage required to pursue long-term national goals and highlighted the importance of holding firm to democratic values, even when political circumstances become challenging.

As she told Congress:

"When social democracy advances here, it strengthens our cause everywhere. And when it is tested here, we feel that test too."

The Progressive Alliance stands with SDSM and with all those working for democracy, dignity, and a more just future.

Today in Skopje, our Global Coordinator Machris Cabreros joined progressive leaders, parliamentarians, and partners from across the Western Balkans to discuss the geopolitical challenges facing the region — from the rise of nationalism and far-right extremism to disinformation and growing political polarisation.

The launch of the Skopje Initiative is about building stronger cooperation among progressive forces committed to democracy, social justice, gender equality, and peace.

The challenges may differ across borders. The responsibility to respond is shared.

The Western Balkans is not a regional story. It is a global one — the same contest between democratic politics and authoritarian capture that the Progressive Alliance tracks from Latin America to South Asia to Africa.

Today in Skopje, our Global Coordinator Machris Cabreros joined the roundtable on Western Balkans and New Geopolitical Dynamics. The EU Growth Plan puts real resources on the table. What progressives across the region are demanding is more than a reform checklist: fair economies, a just transition, equality for all. Convergence, not compliance.

The dividing line is not left and right. It is whether power answers to the people, or only to itself.

Only democracies deliver. The Prespa Agreement proved it. The Skopje Initiative continues it.

Today in Skopje, social democratic and progressive parties from across the Western Balkans are convening for the 2026 Korčula High Level Political School and the formal launch of the Skopje Initiative — a platform for regional cooperation among progressive forces in the region.

Our Global Coordinator, Machris Cabreros, is joining this afternoon roundtable alongside Knut Fleckenstein (FEPS) and Tamara Tripić (CEE Gender Network) to discuss the new geopolitical dynamics shaping the Western Balkans. The roundtable is moderated by Borko Stefanović of the Party of Freedom and Justice, Serbia.
