𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗷𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗸𝗸𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗺𝗶, 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝘂𝘁𝘆 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻

Before joining the Embassy in Cairo, Maija spent several years working on legal, transport and foreign affairs matters in Finland, followed by four years at Finland's Permanent Representation to the European Union in Brussels. A lawyer and civil engineer by training, she speaks seven languages and hopes Arabic will soon become the eighth.

Coming from Finland, a country known for its thousands of lakes, she has always been fascinated by the Nile, which was introduced as the "Queen of Rivers" in one of her favorite stories. Today, she sees it every day from her office window and the feeling of wonder hasn't faded.

That daily view also reminds her of the many opportunities for cooperation between Finland and Egypt. With Finland's expertise in clean technology, water management and recycling, she sees great potential for working together on sustainable solutions. She is equally passionate about education and is proud of Finland's tradition of providing every child with a free school meal, a practice that started 1948 and continues today.

One lesson has guided Maija throughout her diplomatic career: "Be curious and ask the silly questions out loud." She believes curiosity opens doors, encourages learning and helps people feel heard and appreciated.

And one final piece of wisdom?
"Never insult the assistants. They have all the know-how and the best gossip!"

Drawn by her interest in diplomacy, regional politics and international cooperation, Emilia chose Cairo as a place to experience international relations firsthand. With Egypt's unique role connecting the Middle East and Africa, the city offered an opportunity to learn how diplomacy works beyond the classroom.

During her internship, she has discovered that diplomacy is built on teamwork, adaptability and communication across cultures. One of the highlights of her experience was supporting the preparations for the President of Finland's official visit to Egypt, giving her a firsthand look at how political, media and logistical efforts come together behind the scenes.

Looking ahead, Emilia hopes to work on humanitarian issues and human rights, particularly in contexts affected by conflict and displacement. With a background in anthropology, she is fascinated by how political, cultural and economic factors shape people's everyday lives and opportunities.

Whether through diplomacy, humanitarian action or international cooperation, her goal is simple: to contribute to a more stable future and support communities facing complex challenges.

The Palestinian National Committee for the Administration of Gaza hosted a meeting with the Nordic Embassy representatives. The Chair of the Committee, Dr Ali Shaath and the Commissioners gave a briefing about their work.

The NCAG work list is extremely long and challenging. In Gaza, basic infrastructure, housing, clean water, health care, social services and education are needed; jobs must be created, agricultural land revived. Financing mechanisms and justice systems need to be rebuilt. People and goods should move freely.

All this, and many other things, must happen in a safe and secure environment.

Nordic Ambassadors expressed their support for the Palestinians and for the difficult work of the Committee.

While the NCAG expects to be able to enter Gaza, Egypt is hosting the Committee. NCAG is based on UNSC resolution 2803 (2025).
