Our intrepid gardening gang are back this Half Term for another creative and crafty Pebble Painting session. 🖌️🎨
Join the Winton Library Garden Volunteers on Saturday 24 October to decorate a pebble with your spookiest designs yet! 🎃🦇💀🧛 (or a non-spooky design, if you feel like it 🦄😉)
If the weather is lovely and sunny, we'll hold this session outdoors; if not, it'll be inside the library. No need to bring anything: just turn up any time between 10.30 and 12.30pm. We'll provide pebbles and paints!

Thanks to our Garden Volunteer team for running these sessions, and for everything they do to make our community garden grow! 🧡🌱

Today is Bookshop Day! 📚📖📚📖💸
You may have noticed that we are a library, not a book shop. But maybe you've got a favourite library book, and you wish you didn't have to return it? 👀 Or you've discovered a library book that you think your sister would love, and it's her birthday soon? 🎁 Bookshops can help you with that 😉 And it is the National Year of Reading, after all!

Welcome to October at Winton Library ! This is Black History Month in the UK - pop in and see our new display, featuring books that celebrate Black Culture, Great Lives and books by Black authors. 🤎
Did you know? Black History Month was first celebrated in the UK in 1987, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Caribbean emancipation. It was founded by Ghanaian-born Akyaaba Addai-Sebo.

Also on display this month is our bunting-bedecked homage to the Great British Bake Off 🍰 and our new initiative for the National Year of Reading: Reading Bingo! 📖 And we've got an owl-themed scavenger hunt around the library for our younger visitors. I'm reliably informed that... it's a hoot. 🙄😆🦉

Our local Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival starts tonight! 🕺🏽🎭 The fun kicks off down at Bournemouth town centre, with exciting performances for all the family to enjoy - and your local libraries didn't want to be left out 😆 So we've had Arts by the Sea activity sheets all through the summer: come down and pick up some free arty activities for your young creatives. 🎨

As the nights draw in, our minds turn to dark deeds carried out under cover of darkness! 😨 Yes, it's nearly time for our Local History meeting, and for September the theme is... Smuggling! ⚓🧭👀
Did you know Kinson was home to the 'king of the smugglers'? Or that the New Forest was once the perfect hiding place for contraband goods? Join Ross for a coffee and a chat about the local area's historical links to the devious and dangerous smuggling trade. ☕

There's a theme to this week's post, I wonder if you can guess what it is? 🧁👀 Yes, it's the time of year when our thoughts turn to bread, pastry, cake, and other gingham-shrouded mysteries. If you're tempted to get your Bake Off on and become Bournemouth's answer to Paul Hollywood, might we recommend one of our fine cookbooks? Avoid smearing chocolate ganache on your iPhone (never a good look) and pay a visit to our Non-Fiction section for inspiration and instruction. 🍰

It's the season of crunchy leaves, golden sunlight and getting all the warm knitwear out of storage. 🍂 The perfect time of year for settling down with a good book and a warm drink. We've got new fiction, crime, and children's books - plus old favourites, just waiting to be rediscovered.

Calling all future Chess Champions! 🎺 Chess Club is back today at Winton Library between 11.30 and 12.30 PM. It's aimed at children aged 7 to 11, and all abilities are welcome. ♟️
(Please note that a parent/guardian should remain in the library during Chess Club, as children should not be left here on their own, even if they are a potential Grand Master 😆)
