Velindre Matters

Velindre Matters Velindre Matters gives updates on our new Velindre Cancer Centre More and more of us are being diagnosed with cancer, and people are living longer with cancer.

For nearly 70 years, the Velindre Cancer Centre has offered vital specialist cancer treatment and support to people across south Wales. We are proud of our history, but we are constantly evolving to meet the growing demands for cancer services. Now more than ever, we need to adapt to make sure we continue to provide the world-class care Velindre is known for. Our dedicated staff treat and care for

thousands of patients from across south Wales every single year but the current cancer centre does not have the facilities or space necessary to meet the future needs of our patients and staff. Construction of our new Velindre Cancer Centre is underway, and it's one of the biggest projects Wales has seen in decades. Our nVCC will deliver better outcomes through world-class cancer treatment, enhanced diagnostic capability and greater access to innovation, training and research. Every aspect of the nVCC has been shaped around the needs of patients, staff, families, and carers. From easier navigation and better parking to therapeutic spaces and dedicated family areas, the new building will enhance comfort, dignity and the overall experience of care. It will be one of the most sustainable hospitals in the UK, providing leading cancer care for our patients and a better environment for our dedicated staff. The nVCC is designed to grow and adapt. With standardised, flexible clinical spaces, modern infrastructure, and greener energy use, the nVCC will meet the changing needs of cancer care and deliver long-term value for our patients, staff and the NHS. From design to operation, the nVCC leads the way in sustainable healthcare. It is the first all-electric hospital in the UK, uses renewable energy and has been designed to minimise environmental impact as much as possible while delivering the world-class cancer care Velindre is known for. Its sustainable features support Wales’s broader ambition to be net zero and resilient for future generations. Our dedicated staff are working together with Acorn, the consortium chosen to construct the new cancer centre, to build a facility that will serve future generations for decades to come. Sacyr UK, is the construction company building the cancer centre. Our new home is critical in safeguarding the provision of crucial treatment and care for the 1.5 million people of south Wales and is critical to keep pace with the increasing demand. More than just a new building, we're transforming our care across the system. Alongside our new Velindre Cancer Centre we've also opened the Velindre @ Nevill Hall Radiotherapy Unit. Construction of the new Velindre Cancer Centre is underway and we are scheduled to open in Spring 2027.

Members of the new Velindre Cancer Centre (nVCC) team highlighted how the project is delivering one of the UK’s most sustainable cancer centres at a prestigious conference.

Two of the team highlighted the project at the European Healthcare Design conference held in London on June 15/16.

The session, “Building the UK’s greenest cancer centre: A holistic, collaborative home for future-focused healthcare”, looked at how our new home combines a modern building that delivers world-class clinical care alongside long-term flexibility, leading environmental credentials and a space that promotes the wellbeing of staff and patients.

The presentation also outlined how the nVCC marks a shift in the design and delivery of healthcare facilities and discussed the partnership between Velindre, Sacyr, and the Acorn consortium.

Tynnodd aelodau o dîm y Ganolfan Ganser Felindre newydd (CGFn) sylw at sut mae'r prosiect yn darparu un o ganolfannau canser mwyaf cynaliadwy'r DU mewn cynhadledd fawreddog.

Tynnodd dau o'r tîm sylw at y prosiect yng nghynhadledd Dylunio Gofal Iechyd Ewrop a gynhaliwyd yn Llundain ar Fehefin 15/16.

Fe wnaeth y sesiwn, “Building the UK’s greenest cancer centre: A holistic, collaborative home for future-focused healthcare”, edrych ar sut mae ein cartref newydd yn cyfuno adeilad modern sy’n darparu gofal clinigol o’r radd flaenaf ochr yn ochr â hyblygrwydd hirdymor, cymwysterau amgylcheddol blaenllaw, a gofod sy’n hyrwyddo lles staff a chleifion.

Amlinellodd y cyflwyniad hefyd sut mae'r CGFn yn nodi newid yn nyluniad a darpariaeth cyfleusterau gofal iechyd, a thrafododd y bartneriaeth rhwng Felindre, Sacyr, a chonsortiwm Acorn.

As part of Great Big Green Week, we wanted to share with you some of the ways our new Velindre Cancer Centre will be one of the greenest hospitals in the UK 💚

Our new home is a benchmark for sustainable healthcare - low carbon, all-electric, and built to support a greener, healthier future for Wales.

It is the first all-electric hospital in the UK, uses renewable energy and has been designed to minimise environmental impact as much as possible while delivering the world-class cancer care Velindre is known for.

Sustainability, embodied carbon, operational carbon and patient and staff health and wellbeing have been at the centre of our design decision process since day one.

🌿 The nVCC will support and enhance the ecological diversity and natural environment of the site
⚡ All-electric power and heating to help reduce our carbon footprint
🌸 Therapeutic and sensory gardens for patient and staff wellbeing
🥕 Restaurant and kitchen gardens to provide fresh ingredients
🪵 Natural materials used throughout to better blend with the environment
🦊 Biodiversity enhancement to support local wildlife
🌳 Thoughtfully designed landscaping for accessible green space
🦇 Onsite habitat creation for birds, bats, and reptiles
🌉 Ecological corridors to connect habitats
💧 Sustainable urban drainage systems to manage rainwater efficiently
🏡 Minimise energy demand using a passive design approach
♻️ Using non-toxic materials to reduce embodied carbon and waste
🚶‍♀️ A green transport plan to encourage active travel and help reduce car use
🌙 Night-time light pollution minimised by the appropriate lighting
🌬️ Air quality monitored inside the building when in use

A key commitment throughout this project has been to keep the majority of the site green. Our design brief, developed as part of our public tender process in spring 2021, specified that 60% of the site would remain landscaped, leaving only a 40% built footprint. This 40% includes the cancer centre itself, with its green roofs, access roads, the car park, and the Maggie’s Centre.

Mae’r Ganolfan Ganser Felindre newydd yn feincnod ar gyfer gofal iechyd cynaliadwy - carbon isel, yn defnyddio trydan yn unig, ac wedi'i hadeiladu i gefnogi dyfodol gwyrddach ac iachach i Gymru.

Hon ydy'r ysbyty drydan gyntaf yn y DU, mae hi'n defnyddio ynni adnewyddadwy, ac mae hi wedi'i dylunio i leihau'r effaith ar yr amgylchedd gymaint â phosib ac ar yr un pryd, darparu'r gofal canser o'r radd flaenaf y mae Felindre yn adnabyddus amdano.

Mae cynaliadwyedd, carbon ymgorfforedig, carbon gweithredol ac iechyd a lles cleifion a staff wedi bod wrth wraidd ein proses o benderfynu sut i ddylunio’r ganolfan ers y diwrnod cyntaf.

🌿 Bydd y Canolfan Ganser Felindre newydd yn cefnogi ac yn gwella amrywiaeth ecolegol ac amgylchedd naturiol y safle.
⚡ Pŵer a gwresogi trydan i helpu i leihau ein hôl troed carbon
🌸 Gerddi therapiwtig a synhwyraidd ar gyfer llesiant cleifion a staff
🥕 Gerddi bwyty a chegin i ddarparu cynhwysion ffres
🪵 Defnyddiau naturiol yn cael eu defnyddio drwyddi draw i gydweddu'n well â'r amgylchedd
🦊 Gwella bioamrywiaeth i gefnogi bywyd gwyllt lleol
🌳 Tirlunio wedi'i ddylunio'n ofalus ar gyfer mannau gwyrdd hygyrch
🦇 Creu cynefinoedd ar y safle ar gyfer adar, ystlumod ac ymlusgiaid
🌉 Coridorau ecolegol i gysylltu cynefinoedd
💧 Systemau draenio trefol cynaliadwy i reoli dŵr glaw yn effeithlon
🏡 Lleihau'r galw am ynni gan ddefnyddio dull dylunio goddefol
♻️ Defnyddio deunyddiau diwenwyn i leihau carbon ymgorfforedig a gwastraff
🚶 Cael cynllun trafnidiaeth gwyrdd i annog teithio llesol a helpu i leihau'r defnydd o geir
🌙 Llygredd golau yn ystod y nos wedi'i leihau gan y goleuadau priodol
🌬️ Ansawdd yr aer yn cael ei fonitro y tu mewn i'r adeilad pan mae’n cael ei ddefnyddio

Ymrwymiad allweddol drwy gydol y prosiect hwn fu cadw'r rhan fwyaf o'r safle'n wyrdd. Nododd ein briff dylunio, a ddatblygwyd fel rhan o’n proses dendro cyhoeddus yn nhymor y gwanwyn 2021, y byddai 60% o’r safle’n parhau i fod wedi’i dirlunio, gan adael ôl troed adeiledig o 40% yn unig. Mae'r 40% hwn yn cynnwys y ganolfan ganser ei hun, gyda'i thoeau gwyrdd, ffyrdd mynediad, y maes parcio a Chanolfan Maggie's.

Take a look at our newest timelapse showcasing the continued progress on our new Velindre Cancer Centre 💚

Step by step, our future home is becoming a reality as we move closer to opening in spring 2027 - now less than a year away.

More than just a new building, it will transform how we deliver the cancer services Velindre is known for. We will operate one of the largest radiotherapy units in the UK, with 10 state-of-the-art linear accelerators (eight in nVCC and two in the Velindre @ Nevill Hall Radiotherapy Unit) alongside our outreach programme across South Wales.

Work on site is advancing, with progress continuing on the exterior as more and more work is now taking place inside the building. Almost twice the size of our current home, the nVCC will have standardised, flexible clinical spaces, modern infrastructure, and greener energy use, allowing us to meet the changing needs of cancer care and deliver long-term value for our patients, staff and the NHS.

Cymerwch olwg ar ein treigl amser diweddaraf, sy'n dangos y cynnydd parhaus sydd yn cael ei wneud ar ein Canolfan Ganser Felindre newydd 💚

Gam wrth gam, mae ein cartref newydd yn dod yn realiti, wrth i ni symud yn agosach at agor yn nhymor y gwanwyn 2027 - llai na blwyddyn i ffwrdd erbyn hyn.

Mae’n fwy na dim ond adeilad newydd - bydd yn trawsnewid sut rydym yn darparu'r gwasanaethau canser y mae Felindre yn adnabyddus amdanynt. Byddwn yn gweithredu un o'r unedau radiotherapi mwyaf yn y DU, gyda 10 cyflymydd llinellol o'r radd flaenaf (wyth yn CGFn a dau yn Uned Radiotherapi Felindre @ Nevill Hall), ochr yn ochr â’n rhaglen allgymorth ar draws De Cymru.

Mae’r gwaith ar y safle yn gwneud cynnydd da. Mae gwaith yn dal i gael ei wneud ar y tu allan, ac mae mwy o waith yn cael ei wneud y tu mewn nawr hefyd. Bydd y Ganolfan Ganser Felindre newydd bron ddwywaith maint ein hadeilad presennol, a bydd yn cynnig mannau clinigol safonol a hyblyg, seilwaith modern, a defnydd mwy cynaliadwy o ynni. Bydd hyn yn ein helpu i addasu i anghenion newidiol gofal canser, a darparu manteision hirdymor i gleifion, staff a’r GIG

Roedden ni eisiau rhoi gwybod i chi fod un o'r craeniau ar safle’r Ganolfan Ganser Felindre newydd yn mynd i gael ei dynnu i lawr.

Mae caniatâd wedi cael ei roi i dynnu’r craen i lawr y tu allan i oriau gwaith arferol am resymau iechyd a diogelwch.

Mae Hysbysiad Adran 61 wedi cael ei roi i dynnu craen pedwar ar y safle i lawr dros benwythnos, gan ganiatáu i'r tîm gyflawni'r gwaith mewn amgylchedd cwbl reoledig, heb y gweithlu dyddiol arferol ar y safle.

Bydd y gwaith cymeradwy yn digwydd ar:

Ddydd Sadwrn 6 Mehefin 2026 rhwng 13:00 a 18:00

Ddydd Sul 7 Mehefin 2026 rhwng 09:30 a 18:00

Ni fydd unrhyw waith yn dechrau cyn 9.30am ar ddydd Sul, ac ni fydd unrhyw waith yn parhau ar ôl 6pm ar y naill ddiwrnod na'r llall.

Cyhoeddir caniatâd Adran 61 gan yr Awdurdod lleol i ganiatáu i weithgareddau adeiladu penodol gael eu cyflawni y tu allan i oriau gwaith safonol, ac i sicrhau bod lefel y sŵn yn cael ei reoli a’i fonitro.

Rydym yn sylweddoli y gallai'r gwaith hwn fod yn fwy amlwg na gwaith arferol sydd yn cael ei wneud ar y safle, a hoffem ddiolch i drigolion ymlaen llaw am eu hamynedd a'u dealltwriaeth tra bod y cam pwysig hwn o'r gwaith adeiladu yn cael ei gwblhau.

Rydym yn falch o gyhoeddi'r adroddiad o'n gweithdai cymunedol diweddar ar ddyfodol safle Ysbyty’r Eglwys Newydd.

Daeth y gweithdai ag aelodau’r gymuned at ei gilydd i rannu syniadau a safbwyntiau ar sut y gallai’r safle fod o fudd i genedlaethau’r dyfodol fel rhan o’r broses barhaus i werthu’r safle.

Roedd y sesiynau'n rhan o ymrwymiad parhaus Felindre i ymgysylltu'n agored wrth i gynlluniau ar gyfer y safle barhau i ddatblygu.

Mae'r adroddiad a hwyluswyd yn annibynnol, yn crynhoi'r themâu allweddol ac adborth gan gyfranogwyr.

Bydd hyn yn chwarae rhan bwysig wrth lywio camau nesaf y broses, a bydd hefyd yn cael ei rannu gyda phartïon â diddordeb wrth i'r gwaith fynd rhagddo.

Hoffem ddiolch i bawb a gymerodd ran am eu cyfraniadau gwerthfawr.

Mae Felindre yn parhau i fod yn ymrwymedig i weithredu fel tirfeddiannwr cyfrifol, ac i sicrhau bod y gymuned yn parhau i gael gwybodaeth a chael ei chynnwys. Bydd cyfleoedd pellach i ymgysylltu wrth i'r gwaith hwn symud ymlaen.
