Cottenham Parish Council This page is intended to be used to communicate better with the Parish. Cottenham is Fen Edge village located approximately 6 miles outside Cambridge.

Have you heard about the proposed School Street for Cottenham Primary School?

There’s a drop-in information session this evening, 5pm–7.30pm, in the lobby area of Cottenham Village Hall.

Pop along to find out more about the proposals, ask questions and share your views. It’s a great opportunity to learn more and have your say.

🌧️ Flood Action Week: Be prepared, stay informed! 🌧️

We know we’ve been through a period of drought, and flooding might be the last thing on our minds. But the weather can change quickly, so it’s always worth being prepared!

Flood Action Week is a great opportunity to take a few simple steps to help protect your home, business and family.

🏡 Make a flood plan
If your property could be at risk, planning ahead can make all the difference. Find helpful advice and a template to create your own flood plan at https://floodaction.campaign.gov.uk/

📱 Sign up for FREE flood warnings
The Environment Agency provides free flood alerts and warnings for homes and businesses in England. Signing up means you can be notified when flooding may affect your area. https://www.gov.uk/get-flood-warnings

📍 Check your local flood risk
Cambridgeshire County Council provides information about flood risks and previous flood investigations, including a map you can search using your postcode. Knowing what has happened locally before can help you prepare for the future. https://check-long-term-flood-risk.service.gov.uk/map

🤝 Cottenham Parish Council is prepared too!
We have an Emergency Plan in place which includes arrangements for flood events. We also have some emergency equipment available and a team of willing volunteers ready to help out in an emergency. While we can’t prevent flooding, being prepared helps us respond and support our community when it matters.

🧱 What about sandbags?
South Cambridgeshire District Council does not operate a general sandbag service. It has a limited supply for properties at imminent risk of flooding – for example, when water is rising at your front door - rather than for preventative use ahead of bad weather. Priority is given to vulnerable residents, but delivery cannot be guaranteed.

✅ Don't wait until heavy rain is forecast to start preparing. A little planning now could make a real difference if flooding occurs.

📣 COTTENHAM COUNCIL NEWS: What’s been happening in our parish?

There was plenty on the agenda at our October Full Council meeting, with some important decisions and new projects getting underway. Here are the headlines 👇

🏥 Temporary home for the GP surgery
We’ve given permission in principle for a temporary building to be located at the Recreation Ground to provide a home for the High Street GP surgery.

🚨 Emergency Plan updated
Our updated Cottenham Emergency Plan has now been formally adopted, helping us to be better prepared should an emergency affect our community.

🌳 Six new trees for Cottenham
We’ve accepted SCDC’s offer of six free trees, which will be planted in the parish.

♿ More accessible access at the Rec
A new metal accessible kissing gate will be installed at the bottom end of the Recreation Ground, improving access while helping to protect the area.

🏘️ Neighbourhood Plan review begins
A working group has been set up to start reviewing our Cottenham Neighbourhood Plan, making sure it continues to reflect the needs and priorities of our village.

🚌 Could community transport work for you?
We’ve set up a working group to develop a trial community transport scheme using S106 funding. One idea currently being explored is a route from Rampton → Cottenham → Landbeach → Milton Park & Ride → Cambridge North.

🌿 Fen Reeves nature management
The Nature Recovery Group (Sustainable Cottenham) has been given permission to apply for a felling licence to carry out thinning works at Fen Reeves as part of the ongoing management of this important local habitat.

📞 New parish office phone system
We're updating our office phone system this week. We’ll keep any downtime to a minimum, but there may be a short period when the office phone is unavailable. We're still contactable via email, our website and FB Messenger. Or just pop into the office to speak with our staff face to face.

Our October Full Council meeting takes place on Tuesday 6 October at 7.15pm in Cottenham Village Hall – and residents are very welcome to come along.

There’s a varied agenda this month, including:

🚨 Help us tackle anti-social behaviour and dangerous riding in Cottenham

We know that the ongoing issues involving motorcycles and e-bikes are causing concern for residents in Cottenham and the surrounding villages. Some incidents are classed as anti-social behaviour or criminal damage, but others raise serious road safety concerns, particularly where riders are reported to have deliberately driven towards pedestrians or vehicles.

Cottenham Parish Council is working closely with our Neighbourhood Policing Team to raise concerns, share information and support efforts to tackle these issues.

The police are aware of the ongoing situation and are taking action. They will continue to monitor the situation and respond to information provided by the community.

📱 Your reports really do matter

If you witness an incident, please report it to the police. Even if you don't see immediate action, your report helps officers build a picture of what is happening and identify those responsible.

The most useful information includes:

Call 999 if there is an immediate risk to public safety or a crime is happening now.
Call 101 to report incidents that have already happened or where there is no immediate danger.
📹 CCTV or video footage – if an investigating officer sends you a GoodSAM link, please upload any relevant footage.
📸 Photographs of riders or vehicles can be extremely helpful.
🚲 Vehicle registration numbers, where visible, are particularly valuable.

We understand that residents can become frustrated when they don't see an obvious outcome following a report. There can be evidential limitations or ongoing police work that isn't visible to the person who reported the incident.

Please don't assume that reporting an incident is pointless. Every report helps. The more information and evidence the police receive, the better the opportunity to identify those responsible and take appropriate action.

👉 If you see something, report it. If you have footage, share it with the police. Working together we can give the police the information they need to take action.

🚸 Have your say on the proposed School Street on Lambs Lane

The County Council is considering proposals for a School Street on Lambs Lane, outside Cottenham Primary School, with the aim of improving journeys to and from the school.

The proposal would close Lambs Lane to through traffic between Pelham Way and Harlestones Road on school days during:
🕗 8.20am–8.50am
🕒 2.50pm–3.30pm

A small amount of traffic, such as residents within the restriction, will have exemptions.

The County Council’s Active Travel Team will be holding information sessions to explain the proposal, answer questions and hear your views:

📍 Tuesday 6 October, 8am–10am - in front of Cottenham Primary School
📍 Wednesday 14 October, 5pm–7.30pm - Cottenham Village Hall

If you have questions or views about the proposal, please come along and speak directly to the County Council’s Active Travel Team.

🌟 In a week of ups and downs, we’re pleased to say there have definitely been more ups! 🙌

It’s been a very busy one, with a few challenges along the way, but lots of positive things happening too - and that’s what we’re choosing to focus on! 💚

Thank you to everyone who continues to get involved, lend a hand, share ideas and support our community. It really does make a difference.

Here’s to the ups - and hopefully plenty more of them next week! 😊

High Street Resurfacing Update from Cambs County Council:

We would like to provide an update regarding the Cottenham resurfacing works due to start in late October 2026.

Unfortunately following recent discussions with utility providers and developers, it has become necessary to postpone part of the programme of resurfacing works around the village including works along Cottenham High Street.

We appreciate that this will be disappointing news for the Parish Council and residents in and around the village. We have had to take this decision due to the uncertainty surrounding proposals to install extensive new power infrastructure associated with a new data centre development in Sutton which have recently come forward.

Should the Data Centre works go ahead using the highway network, a significant length of the main route though Cottenham will require excavation to lay power cables. The current timing proposed for this would mean that newly resurfaced roads would be excavated only shortly after construction. This would mean additional disruption for residents and businesses as well as the highway network and reduce the lifespan of the new carriageway surface. Please note that the County Council is legally required to permit access to the highways network for utilities works.

As such, we have had to take the decision to postpone part of our planned programmed resurfacing work in Cottenham. Resurfacing work, due as part of this programme, will continue on the roads unaffected by the developer's proposals - Corbett Street, Margett Street and Rook Street - in late October/early November.

We are exploring opportunities to coordinate these programmes to minimise disruption to residents. However, at this time it is not possible to confirm whether both works can be undertaken at the same time.

We are continuing our discussions with the developer and the utility company and will be in touch again when we have further clarity on their plans and a date for High Street resurfacing work to take place.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding. Please let me know if you have any questions. I welcome your feedback on maintenance and repairs which we can undertake on the High Street pending the future resurfacing work.

🚨 Witnesses sought – Lambs Lane / Recreation Ground

We are appealing to anyone who was affected by or witnessed an incident involving two lads on a motorbike/e-bike around Lambs Lane and the Recreation Ground during the school run this afternoon.

If you saw what happened, were involved in the incident, or have any information that may assist the police, please report it to the police via 101. Even if you think the information may be insignificant, it could help piece together what happened.

We are liaising with our Neighbourhood Policing Team and have already passed on CCTV footage of the individuals involved.

Please do not post speculation or identify anyone publicly on social media. If you have information, please report it directly to the police so it can be properly investigated.
