Not only do we have the fantastic rock chick Rebel Reader to help us with the Summer Reading Challenge but we also have enlisted the help of a young and upcoming rapper by the name of Princess Rhymes, who'll be on the mic during our Bounce & Rhyme sessions over the summer. If you spot her in the library be sure to give her a 'Yo, word’ and a fist bump.

On Saturday we did our first volunteer induction for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. Please meet Rebel Reader, who will be helping us out all over the summer from launch day onwards. A familiar-looking* cool rock chick with a heart of gold.

*Also, scarily, she looks a bit like Slash from Guns N’ Roses!

Big congratulations to Malorie Blackman, and Julia Donaldson who have both been made Dames in the King's Birthday Honours list this year. Both are amazing authors and children's champions and it's much deserved.

Summer Reading Challenge 2026, 'Read to the Beat', is coming! Soon we will be visiting schools to let the children know all the details about how they can join in with this year's challenge. Also, over the next couple of weeks we will have more details on Facebook and in the library regarding our launch day and upcoming activities.

Here's a throwback to last year's Summer Reading Challenge, where a curious character by the name of Sunny Flower came along to volunteer with us. Sadly Sunny is on other duties this year; however, we have managed to obtain the services of a couple of other characters who will be helping us during this year's challenge. Keep a look out!

Summer Reading Challenge is coming. Over the next couple of weeks we will be letting you know more about what is happening in the Library during the reading challenge and how your child can take part.

It's almost that time of year again... the Summer Reading Challenge!

Each summer we challenge children to read 6 books. In return they get stickers - plus a medal and a certificate for completing the challenge. This year the theme is 'Read to the Beat', and to celebrate we'll be hosting lots of fantastic music-themed events in our libraries.

The challenge itself will launch on Saturday 4 July. We'll have more info soon, so be sure to keep an eye on our socials!

The Summer Reading Challenge is presented by The Reading Agency and delivered by libraries.
