Better roads!

Resurfacing of the A505 between the tunnel and the roundabout at the western end of the Baldock by pass is now completed (apart from painting the lines on the Royston bound carriageway). This is the area where all the potholes were so the road should now be pothole free on this section.

The section between the tunnel and the Wallington junction was supposed to be done at the same time but the work was not completed in time. This is now planned to be done overnight between 23rd and 27th August. This should ensure that this section remains in good condition through the winter (and hopefully for many further winters).

The white lines will them all be on the whole of the Royston bound carriageway and the section leading to the tunnel on the Letchworth bound carriageway will be repainted once all this work has been done.

We rely on teachers to educate our children, the least we can do is make sure they want to come back after the summer.

Even after today's announcement, high street hospitality businesses up and down the country will still be in serious trouble.

Andy Burnham should take up our plan to Save our High Streets, with a proper overhaul of business rates, a crack down on ‘ghost landlords’ and rejuvenating town centres.

LIB DEMS SOUND NOTE OF CAUTION AS CHURCHGATE MOVES INTO NEW FEASIBILITY STAGE

At a Full Council meeting on 16 July, North Hertfordshire Liberal Democrat councillors supported a move to conduct an additional phase of “feasibility, viability and delivery planning” work supporting regeneration plans for Hitchin’s Churchgate shopping centre, but cautioned that it must deliver a final scheme that’s right for the town.

Churchgate regeneration has been a long-held ambition, with council chair Cllr Keith Hoskins referring to comments about it from as long ago as 1987. Previous attempts to achieve regeneration have all fallen at various hurdles.

Liberal Democrat councillor for Hitchin Highbury Sam Collins emphasised the point. “The people of Hitchin have seen decades of discussion, consultation and bits of paper being passed back and forwards about Churchgate and what to do with it, and I think people are a bit fed up of it”, he told Full Council. “We’ve go to do what is right for Hitchin and the whole of North Hertfordshire, not necessarily what is right for developers who want to make profit”.

The future of parking in the town centre remains a contentious issue. Lib Dem councillor Matt Barnes added, “I’m not convinced that the parking problem has been sufficiently addressed. I’m comfortable to progress this through to the next stage, but I think we need better answers around that.”

The request for further funding was approved, and feasibility work will therefore begin shortly. Liberal Democrats will continue to scrutinise the administration’s decision-making closely.
