Library Closure Notice 🌡️

Due to the exceptionally high temperatures, Launceston Library has closed early today.

Temperature readings taken throughout rooms in the building reached between 29.5°C and 37°C, making conditions uncomfortable and unsuitable for both visitors and staff.

The library will also remain closed tomorrow as temperatures stay at similarly high levels, (Thursday is a normal closed day) opening Friday again as normal.

We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding while we prioritise the wellbeing of our visitors, volunteers, and staff.

Please stay safe, keep cool, and look after yourselves during this period of extreme heat. ☀️💧

This Refugee Week, we're celebrating Courage.

Courage isn't always loud. Sometimes it's found in simple acts: introducing yourself to someone new, sharing a story, trying a new food, reading a book, or discovering a perspective you hadn't considered before.

This year's Refugee Week also marks 75 years since the Refugee Convention, which affirms that people forced to flee deserve protection, dignity and hope.

Libraries are built on simple acts. Every borrowed book is an opportunity to explore a different experience, make a new connection, or see the world through someone else's eyes.

Join this friendly, informal coffee morning to meet, chat and socialise with others who understand the experiences of living with hearing loss. It’s a welcoming and supportive space where people can share lived experiences, offer encouragement and help one another navigate everyday life.

We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of David Hockney, one of Britain’s greatest artistic voices and a true pioneer of contemporary art.

Emerging from the north of England in the 1960s, Hockney made his mark in Swinging London before finding inspiration in Los Angeles.
Never afraid to experiment, he continually pushed artistic boundaries, from his celebrated figurative works and innovative Polaroid “joiners” to his later embrace of digital technology.

His bold use of colour, unique perspective and endless curiosity transformed the way we see the world around us. Through many decades of creativity, he inspired generations of artists and art lovers alike.

We are grateful for David Hockney’s extraordinary contribution to the art world. His work brought joy, challenged convention, and reminded us of the beauty found in everyday life.
His legacy will continue to inspire for many years to come.

Rest in peace, David Hockney. He will be greatly missed, but his artistic vision will live on through the many books and published material based on his life.

Cllr Nicola Gilbert, Mayor of Launceston, visited St Mary Magdalene this morning to admire the wonderful floral displays.

More than 40 local charities and organisations are exhibiting as part of this year’s Festival of Flowers.
This includes our library art and craft group contribution.

Don’t forget there’s cake and refreshments available from 12th to 14th June.
🌼They’re open from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. daily.
🌸Entry is free. All donations will be shared between The Memory Café, Launceston First Aid Service, and St Mary’s Church.

Thank you St Catherine's C of E School and Nursery Year 6 and teachers for attending our author event with Tom Palmer. It was wonderful to welcome you and see your enthusiasm and engagement throughout the morning.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to Carol and Jan, volunteers from Lawrence House Museum whose fantastic display of World War Two artefacts and personal insights provided valuable historical context and helped make the morning such a memorable and engaging experience. Their time, knowledge and dedication were greatly appreciated.

Thank you all for helping to make the event such a success.
