Bring History Home with Cornwall Libraries 🌊📚

When we explore Cornwall's heritage, we rightfully look to our mining roots, fishing villages, and maritime towns. But our local archives also contain remarkable global stories that are deeply woven right into our communities:

🎻 In Truro: Joseph Emidy, a talented African violinist, became one of Cornwall’s most celebrated 19th-century musicians and composers.
⚓ In Falmouth: John Alice found sanctuary here in the 1800s, building a life and family within the maritime community.
📜 In Penryn: Parish archives record the everyday lives of Black residents like Maria Weymouth dating back centuries.

Learning about our past is about discovering the complete, rich picture of where we live.

This black history month, we are highlighting three beautifully illustrated children's books that trace the long, diverse history of Britain:

📖 Brilliant Black British History by Atinuke

Here’s your monthly catch-up on what’s happening and what’s coming up this month.

Join us for events, activities, groups and plenty of opportunities to get creative, discover something new, meet others and enjoy your local library.

Sharing our Poetry Day selection and a review of Poems for Life to tempt.
Join our poetry group with Jane Holland to write a poem of your own❤️

Taking its inspiration from Shakespeare’s idea of the “seven ages” of a human life, this new anthology brings together the best-loved poems in English to inspire, comfort and delight readers for a lifetime. Beginning with babies, the book is divided into sections on childhood, growing up, making a living and making love, family life, getting older, and approaching death, ending with poems of mourning and commemoration.

Ranging from Chaucer to Carol Ann Duffy, via Shakespeare, Keats, and Lemn Sissay, this book offers something for each of those moments in life – whether falling in love, finding your first grey hair or saying your final goodbyes – when only a poem will do.

Dear parents and carers,

Last weekend, the library experienced a technical issue generating the codes for the children’s treasure trails. We’re sorry if this prevented your child from completing the final part of their Cornwall Reading Challenge.

We have one final weekend to get everyone sorted!

Friday 18th September : 9.30am–5pm
Saturday 19th September : 10am–1pm

Please pop into the library to collect your treasure trail code and let us know your child’s name so we can add them to our list and prepare their completion certificate, ready to be sent out to schools.

And if your child has completed their challenge — a huge well done! Thank you for taking part, for reading, exploring and becoming a true Reading Champion this summer.

🌟 We’ve loved seeing you all summer! 🌟

It’s been wonderful chatting with you about the amazing books children have been reading, the audiobooks they’ve been listening to, and all the fun events and crafts they’ve been enjoying. 📚✨

We know going back to school is just around the corner, so don’t forget to tell us when you’ve completed your final books and unlock your last Cornwall Reading Challenge rewards! 🔓✨

The challenge has been so popular that we’ve run short of a few prizes! But don’t worry — we’re keeping notes and records of everyone who is waiting, including who will need their completion certificates once they’re back at school.

Children taking part in the CRC have loved collecting their wristbands and stickers, many have enjoyed using their free swim vouchers, and loads have headed out to try their free treasure trail! 🏊‍♂️🗺️

🏅 Your Extraordinary Explorer rewards:

📖 2 books = Starter booklet with swim voucher, wristband and stickers
🥈 4 books = Explorer compass or magnifying glass
🥇 6 books = Completion medal keyring, certificate and treasure trail

⏰ It’s not too late! The challenge closes on Saturday 12th September at 1pm.

Cornwall Libraries is launching a new Reading with Friends scheme to make it easier to enjoy books with others.

From September 11, library users can borrow four copies of the same book to share with friends. There are lots of titles to choose from, including adult fiction, young adult and popular BookTok books.

Libraries also offer 12-book bundles for reading groups and an online book club.
