You may spot low priced fire extinguishers in shops or online, particularly dry powder models. But before buying one for your business, have you considered:

Is it suitable for the environment and fire risks?
Dry powder isn’t generally recommended for occupied indoor spaces unless justified by a specific risk assessment. Discharging it can reduce visibility and affect breathing, making evacuation more difficult.

Has it been commissioned?
A new extinguisher should receive an initial commissioning service by a competent person when installed. Being brand new in a box doesn’t replace this check.

Have you planned for annual servicing?
Standard portable extinguishers should be serviced at least once a year by a competent person, with regular visual checks between visits.

Fire doors are an important part of a building's fire protection but damage, missing seals, poor closing or simply being wedged open can stop them doing the job they're designed to do. So, the next time you walk past one, we dare you to take the 30 second test…

Does it close fully into the frame?
Are the seals present and undamaged?
Is there any obvious damage to the door or frame?
Are the hinges and hardware secure?
Is it free from obstructions?
And the big one… is it being wedged open?

An extinguisher can be serviced and ready to use, but that only helps if people know where it is and can reach it. Over time, stock gets stacked in front of fire points, furniture is rearranged, and extinguishers can be moved without anyone noticing. That’s why fire safety needs attention between service visits, too.

✅ Carry out regular in-house checks to make sure extinguishers are visible, accessible and in their designated positions.
✅ Keep fire points clear and clearly marked so equipment is easy to identify.
✅ Use asset CAD drawings to record extinguisher locations and help spot anything missing or out of place.
✅ Train your staff so they know where extinguishers are located, understand why access must be kept clear, and know not to move them from their designated positions. If an extinguisher has been moved or used, it should be reported promptly.

A few simple checks can prevent a last-minute search when every second matters. Know where it is. Keep the way clear. Make sure your team does too.

Coffee Mornings bring people together across the UK to connect, talk and support those affected by cancer. For us, it’s a chance to pause during a busy working week, enjoy each other’s company and recognise the important work Macmillan does. 💚

Over the past 30 years, working across all types of premises, we’ve seen certain fire safety issues come up again and again…

- Fire doors wedged open
- Escape routes blocked or being used for storage
- Obstructed extinguishers

A little piece of firefighting history spotted at Warwick Castle last weekend.

This historic installation gives a fascinating glimpse into how buildings were once equipped to tackle a fire. The canvas hose, brass valves, nozzle and mechanical water pressure gauge formed part of a manually operated firefighting provision, allowing water to be directed onto a developing fire long before the sophisticated systems and monitoring we have today.

One detail that particularly caught our eye was the original Hunt & Mitton Makers, Birmingham branding still visible on the equipment. Believed to date from around the late 1800s to early 1900s, it’s a great example of the firefighting equipment being manufactured and installed during this period. The wear, scuffs and patina around the equipment tell a story. This was practical fire protection, designed to be ready when it was needed.

From installations like these to the modern fire protection systems we install, maintain and inspect today, the equipment, technology and standards have changed considerably but the purpose hasn’t. Protecting people and property from fire.

As a family fire safety business since 1996, we’ve seen first hand how fire protection has evolved over the past 30 years. From the equipment, servicing methods and standards we worked with in our early days, some of which we still have in our own archives today, to the technology and systems we work with now, it’s fascinating to see how far the industry has come.
