We have had a number of questions regarding critical care drivers/assistants and about ECAs and EMTs

A critical care driver is often a trained clinician Paramedic, EMT, ECA, EAC, EAP, etc.

Critical care driver/assistant works in a multidisciplinary team often along side consultants, Critical care paramedics, Paramedics, nurses etc.

Depending on needs they either provide support in the rear of the ambulance providing care to a critically unwell patient or an emergency response driver. Everyone that has worked on an ambulance has experienced overzealous driving by their crew mate that does nothing to support patients or staff providing treatment. Critical care drivers are highly skilled and used to providing rapid but smooth transport for patients and the care team.

Many ambulance trusts across the UK provide a critical care transport service. WAST for example have ACCTs and CHANTS. Different trusts have different terms for this service and often require additional training specific for the role.

There are a number of interchangeable terms to indicate clinical skill levels and bandings, these all vary per ambulance services across the UK.

EAP (Emergency Ambulance Practitioner)
EMT (Emergency Medical Technician)
EAC (Emergency Ambulance Crew)
ECA (Emergency Care Assistant)
AAP (Associate Ambulance Practitioner)

These can all mean the same clinical skill level and banding across different UK Ambulance Services and also a way to differentiate different levels within a single ambulance service.

At MSW Events we use:

Doctor
Paramedic
Nurse
EMT
ECA - Student Paramedics and FRECs with emergency driving qualifications
FREC 4
FREC 3

πŸ‘‹ MEET THE TEAM MONDAYS – LIUM
Founding Director & Clinical Lead | MSW Events

We’re proud to introduce Lium, our Founding Director and Clinical Lead at MSW Events.

With over 20 years’ experience in the events industry, covering event marshalling, security and medical services, Lium brings a wealth of knowledge and frontline experience to the MSW Events team.

Lium has over 10 years’ experience in the ambulance service and is an award-winning Paramedic with the Welsh Ambulance Service, where he currently works as a Cymru High Acuity Response Unit (CHARU) Paramedic.

πŸš‘ Lium began his ambulance career with the London Ambulance Service before transferring to the Welsh Ambulance Service. Throughout his career, he has worked across metropolitan, rural and semi-rural environments, gaining extensive experience in a wide range of clinical and operational situations.

He is also a Special Operations Response Team (SORT) trained Paramedic, having undertaken specialist training with both the London and Welsh Ambulance Services.

His experience includes responding to major incidents, major trauma, life-threatening emergencies and maternity emergencies. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Lium took on the role of Bronze Logistics for Central London, supporting the operational response during an unprecedented period for the NHS and emergency services.

🌍 Away from his professional roles, Lium has also volunteered medically in Kenya, using his skills and experience to support communities with limited access to regular medical care.

At MSW Events, Lium’s unique combination of frontline clinical expertise, major incident experience and extensive event-sector knowledge helps us maintain the highest standards of safety, professionalism and patient care.

We’re incredibly proud to have him leading our clinical team. πŸ’™

Why Our MSW RRV Is So Important at Events πŸš‘

When you’re organising an event, having the right medical response capability on site isn’t just a box to tick β€” it can make a real difference when every second counts.

That’s why our MSW Events Rapid Response Vehicle (RRV) is such an important part of the medical cover we provide.

πŸš‘ Rapid Response – Our RRV allows our medical team to get quickly to incidents across the event site, particularly where larger vehicles may struggle to access.

🩺 Equipped for the unexpected – The vehicle provides our team with immediate access to essential medical equipment, allowing us to assess and treat patients quickly and effectively.

⚑ Bringing the response to the patient – Rather than waiting for a patient to be brought to a medical point, our RRV allows our team to take the appropriate equipment and clinical support directly to them.

πŸ“ Large events, large sites – At festivals, sporting events and large public gatherings, incidents can happen anywhere. A dedicated RRV helps us provide a more flexible and responsive medical presence.

🀝 Working as part of the wider response – Our RRV can support our on-site medical teams and work alongside other emergency services when escalation or further assistance is required.

At MSW Events, we believe good event medical cover is about more than simply having a first aid post.

It’s about having the people, equipment, planning and response capability to deal with whatever the event may bring.

Prepared. Professional. Responsive.

πŸš‘ TAF Festival! πŸ’™

We had a fantastic time at the TAF Festival in Margam today, giving children the opportunity to get hands-on and learn some important lifesaving skills in a fun and safe environment.

From practising CPR on our training manikins β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή, to learning what it’s like inside the back of an ambulance πŸš‘, and having a go with our choking training vests, it was brilliant to see so many children getting involved, asking questions and building confidence.

We believe it’s never too early to start learning skills that could one day make a real difference. πŸ™Œ

That’s why we also offer Mini Medics First Aid and Mini Medics Mental Health courses for children, designed to teach essential first aid and mental health awareness in an engaging, age-appropriate way.

πŸ‘§πŸ§’ Mini Medics – empowering children with the skills and confidence to help themselves and others.

πŸ“© Interested in bringing Mini Medics to your school, community group or event? Get in touch with MSW Events to find out more.
