Bromley House Library Independent historic library funded by member subscriptions in Nottingham city centre. New members welcome

Nottingham Subscription Library was founded in 1816 and moved in 1822 to its present home, Bromley House, which is centrally situated in the city on Angel Row. It is a dark red brick building built in 1752 as a ‘town house’ for George Smith, grandson of the founder of Smiths Bank, the oldest known provincial bank in the country.

Bromley House Library will be closed for the spring bank holiday on Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th May.

We are open as usual on Saturday 23rd and re-open after the bank holiday on Wednesday 27th at 9:30am.

We wish all of our friends and members a lovely long weekend.

Visit Bromley House Library at one of our two upcoming public tour events.

Booking is essential.

📚 History Tours on Sunday 24th May, various time slots available from 11:00am.

📖 Behind the Scenes at Bromley House in Support of Lowdham Books Festival and Independent Bookshop Week on Thursday 18th June, various time slots available from 4:30pm.

With an experienced tour guide you will journey through the book lined rooms, discovering our history and collections, and learning more about some of our inhabitants past and present!

Meet staff to talk about how we care and look after our books, and we will tell you more about some of our unique collections items - from our oldest to largest books.

After your tour you can wander in our Georgian garden, discovering this hidden gem in the middle of a busy city.
