Robert Montgomery is a Scottish artist based in London, renowned for his large-scale light works, using words and poetry installed in public spaces.

Montgomery's poem, created in 2013, is presented alongside a landmark exhibition of the works of Robert MacBryde and Robert Colquhoun, exploring their work as trailblazing 20th century artists and their life together.

There's only two more weeks to see our temporary exhibition 'Artists, Lovers, Outsiders'! Discover the forgotten story of 'The Two Roberts' - Robert MacBryde and Robert Colquhoun were, briefly, two of the most famous artists in the world. Now, they are almost forgotten and more often remembered for their tragically short lives, if at all.

🎨 Curated by author Damian Barr, this landmark exhibition shares the story of their lives together, as a pioneering couple in the 20th century art world. The exhibition contains several works never displayed to the public, shining light on two trailblazing Scottish artists.

in 1642, King Charles I rode to Nottingham Castle, and raised his royal standard outside our gates, calling his supporters to rally for the crown - effectively beginning the English Civil War.

🏰 Nottingham Castle played an incredibly important part during the nine years of war that followed, and was a stronghold for the Parliamentarian army fighting against the King.

We had a fantastic weekend this month, commemorating the events of the Civil War with The Sealed Knot Society Official, who recreated the raising of the standard for our visitors to experience!

Get another taste of Ancient Greek history at Nottingham Castle's art gallery! We're proud to be the home of Guillaume Guillon-Lethière's stunning painting 'Homer Singing His Iliad at the Gate of Athens'!

🎨 This work hangs at the head of our Long Gallery, and depicts Ancient Greek poet Homer recounting his epic poem 'The Iliad' - the precursor to the story of Odysseus making his way home after the Trojan War. The painting returned to Nottingham Castle in 2025, after being displayed at The Clark Institute in Massachusetts, followed by Musée du Louvre in Paris.
