Through heavy rain and glorious sunshine, it’s been a busy May at Northern Roots,

Our volunteers have been preparing the urban farm by making nutrient dense compost, weeding, planting, and building a runner bean frame using coppiced wood from the site🫘

This month also saw our Roots to Rebirth heritage walk, which welcomed local people to explore the fascinating history of the Northern Roots site, from Robert Thatcher’s majestic 19th century Brook Mills to the Victorian visitor destination Strawberry Gardens and the forgotten homestead of Cherry Valley🔍🏭

Heritage Champions Gemma, Kiran, Roberta and Matt shared old maps, live poetry readings and personal connections to the site, bringing heritage stories to life👏

Northern Roots is steadily growing into a place for community, nature, creativity, enterprise, learning, food and connection🌱

History, community, and memories are being made at Northern Roots, – and celebrated with pizza!

Over the past 18 months, we’ve been lucky enough to work with a wonderful team of talented people, as part of our second project. Last week we said goodbye to the team, celebrating the work they have created and contributed👏

The Citizen Researchers surveyed local communities to gather vital information and ideas, the Citizen Rangers carried out nature surveys to help protect the environment for years to come, and the Heritage Champions brought forgotten names and stories back into public knowledge🔍🌱🗣

Through these paid part-time roles, participants have been able to explore new career paths, write award-winning poetry, create artworks, record podcasts, launch heritage-inspired businesses, build new connections, and deliver events, walks, talks and exhibitions for the people of .

Thank you Kiran, Roberta, Thomas, Emily, Matt, Leon, Gemma, Alison, Eleanor, Malachi and Tina - we’re going to miss you all!💚

Make sure to check out the Northern Roots Heritage Exhibition at Oldham Archive, featuring an interactive digital kiosk, audio commentary, and a beautiful taxidermy snipe bird. On display until 30th June. Plan your visit👉 https://northern-roots.uk/events/heritage-exhibition-at-oldham-archive/

Soil investigation with Oasis Academy Oldham Year 9 class and Action For Conservation 🔍

What a delight to have Oasis Academy down on our urban farm! The young people got hands-on sampling soil, counting worms, and carrying out experiments to better understand the land beneath their feet🪱

Georgia, our Urban Farm and Landscape Manager, explained why it’s so important to understand and adapt to the soils’ unique traits.

The information the young people dug up will help Northern Roots both preserve and enhance the environment for future generations🌳

Northern Roots is developing a brand new learning programme and will be welcoming several local education providers to site over the coming months. Visit our Learning and Skills page for more information - https://northern-roots.uk/opportunities/learning-skills/

’'It’s been a privilege to support local people as they discover more about Northern Roots, Oldham, and their own potential. Through this project, participants have explored new career paths, written award-winning poetry, created artworks, recorded podcasts, launched heritage-inspired businesses, built new connections, and delivered events, walks, talks and exhibitions for the people of . These are opportunities and achievements that may not otherwise have been possible. As Northern Roots grows into a thriving community hub and visitor destination, we will continue to uncover, share and celebrate our heritage, ensuring that local people are part of every step.” Rebecca May, Heritage Engagement Manager

Thanks to funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, we were able to hire 12 people on a paid, part-time basis to uncover the natural and social heritage of the Northern Roots site.

The Citizen Researchers surveyed local communities to gather vital information and ideas, the Citizen Rangers carried out nature surveys to help protect the environment for years to come, and the Heritage Champions brought forgotten names and stories back into public knowledge.
