Oldham Mountain Rescue Team

Oldham Mountain Rescue Team was formed in 1964 and is just one of 60 volunteer Mountain & Cave Rescue Teams providing a search and rescue services.

Prepared to help people in difficulties in the wild and remote places of England and Wales. Oldham Mountain Rescue Team is a voluntary organisation whose objective is “to save life and alleviate distress, primarily in upland and mountain areas” without cost or obligation. Oldham Mountain Rescue Team was formed in 1964 and is just one of around 53 volunteer mountain and cave rescue teams providing

a search and rescue service prepared to help people in difficulties in the wild and remote places of England and Wales. There are 24 teams in Scotland and 3 in Northern Ireland. Each team works mainly in its own area and provides a service linked to local physical and geographical needs. For the Oldham team it is the northern end of the Peak District National Park the rural and urban areas of Greater Manchester. We have strong links with Greater Manchester Police, North West Ambulance Service and The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service. The team helps the Police in other search activities in areas and conditions where they may not have adequate, resources or experience. In addition to mountain rescue and search activities, the team is available as a back up for the ambulance and fire services at busy times, during severe weather, major incident or where our specialist skills are needed. Our team of 50+ volunteers provide a professional rescue service 24hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We are funded almost entirely by generous public donation.

🚨Callout – 29/08/26

Yesterday the team was called to assist Greater Manchester Police (GMP) who requested assistance with the search for a 71 year-old male with dementia who was missing in the Piethorne Reservoir area of Newhey. The individual had an air tag that was indicating he was in the area of the reservoir. Initial searches by the Police, including a search by the NPAS helicopter, had not provided any further information.

The Team were mobilised, along with the water section, to the dam wall at Piethorne Reservoir. Our Water team commenced a search of the waters edge either side of the dam wall, both on foot and on the water using the raft. Two further section began searches of the paths and tracks not already covered by the Police.

MRSDE Search dogs were requested with 2 dogs responding. The first dog, with its handler and a navigator from the Team, was on the way to their allocated search area when they found the individual, who was cold and confused. He was walked the short distance to our control vehicle and assessed before being handed over to the Police and their family for further checks.

We are grateful for such a positive outcome and our sincere kindest wishes go to the casualty and his family.

Team members with two of our vehicles attended Oldham Rugby League Football Club on Sunday at Boundary Park for their match against Salford, to raise funds in aid of the replacement vehicles project.

As a result of the generosity from fans, (Home and Away) visitors, guests in the Broadway Suite and VIP boxes, we raised over £700.00, which is a boost to our fundraising efforts.

The club kindly gave free tickets to our team members to watch the match while fundraising, but a callout during the second half meant that some team members had to leave to respond to the incident.

The remaining team members stayed until the end and were rewarded with a late Oldham win.

🚨Callout – 23/08/26

Yesterday the team was called to assist North West Ambulance Service with the extraction of a patient who had reportedly fallen from a 50 foot drop whilst out riding their bike. A full Team callout was initiated with the first vehicle making it's way from a pre arranged event.

A PhoneFind confirmed the location as the quarry off Chew Track. A NWAS Rapid Response vehicle (RRV), double crewed ambulance and Helimed had also been mobilised. The helicopter landed at Chew Mount with the paramedics making their way on foot to the scene. The RRV and ambulance arrived along with the first of the Team vehicles. All treatment was carried out by Helimed and NWAS before the casualty was assisted into the ambulance for detailed assessment.

The decision was made to transfer the casualty by ambulance to the hospital rather than by aircraft. The Team recovered the casualty's bike and returned it to Boarshurst before standing down.

We wish the casualty a speedy recovery and thank everyone involved in the rescue.

💚 A huge thank you to Clare! 💚

Clare recently gave up her time to train our volunteers at Oldham Mountain Rescue Team in Mental Health First Aid.

This is an incredibly valuable skill for our team. When supporting casualties, we may encounter people experiencing fear, shock, anxiety or trauma, and knowing how to recognise and respond to those needs can make a real difference.

Just as importantly, we need to look after each other. Mountain rescue can be physically and emotionally demanding, and being able to recognise when a fellow team member may be struggling and know how to offer support is vital.

Thank you, Clare, for sharing your knowledge and helping us become a stronger, more supportive team. 🏔️💚

🚨Callout – 18/08/26

Yesterday the team was called to assist North West Ambulance Service with the extraction of a casualty from woodland at Daisy Nook Country Park.

The first Team member arrived on scene before the ambulance as the initial crew had been diverted to another incident. A team medic carried out an initial survey and identified a lower leg injury. Shortly afterwards, the NWAS crew arrived and assisted with pain relief and treatment. The casualty was placed on a Team stretcher for the short uphill carry to the ambulance. Once the casualty was handed over to the ambulance, the Team returned to base to restock the vehicle.

We wish the casualty a speedy recovery and would like to thank the amazing crew from North West Ambulance Service.

🚨 Callout – 09/08/26

On Sunday morning, we were called to assist our neighbouring team, Glossop Mountain Rescue Team (GMRT), following a report of an injured walker on a remote section of Bleaklow.

Our team, along with Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team, was requested to assist with the stretcher evacuation.

The casualty was evacuated over challenging terrain during a long stretcher carry to a waiting ambulance at the roadside, where they were transferred into the care of the ambulance service.

Thanks to all the teams and agencies involved for their assistance

Are you up for the challenge?

Studio 32 in Denshaw are hosting a Mountain Rescue themed Team Challenge event to help raise money towards our Replacement Vehicles Fund.

Teams of five can enter and take on the six challenges - OMRT will also be entering a team!

Even if you’re not taking on the challenge you can come down and cheer on those who are and enjoy the BBQ, DJ, and bouncy castle for the kids.

🚨 Callout – 03/08/26

Late on Sunday afternoon, we were called to Blackstone Edge following reports of a person who had fallen from rocks near the trig point.

The team quickly mobilised from the White House Pub and made their way along the Pennine Way to the casualty.

On arrival, we found a family of four who had been enjoying the views when one member of the group slipped from the rocks, sustaining a painful ankle injury. Our team medic assessed the casualty, administered pain relief, and immobilised the injured ankle with a splint before they were carefully loaded onto a stretcher.

While treatment was underway, additional OMRT team members and colleagues from Calder Valley Search And Rescue Team (CVSRT)made their way to the scene in preparation for the challenging stretcher carry. The casualty was carried over uneven, rugged, and rocky terrain down the hill reaching an even track towards to a waiting team 4×4 Land Rover, approximately 1 kilometer away.

The casualty was then transported by Land Rover to the roadside at the White House, where they were transferred into the care of the North West Ambulance Service.

The remaining family members were then given a lift back to their vehicle at Windy Hill.

We wish the casualty a speedy recovery and would like to thank Calder Valley Search And Rescue Team for their assistance and support.

A huge thank you to Wendy at Tesco Farnworth, Lucy at Tesco Walkden and Rose at Tesco Failsworth and their teams for the generous donations of essential supplies, alongside the donations from Tesco Greenfield.

With many of our volunteers having spent long hours on prolonged deployments supporting the ongoing moorland fires, donations like these help keep the team fed, hydrated and operational when it matters most.

Even during one of our busiest July's for callouts, routine maintenance never stops. Keeping every vehicle operational means we're always ready when we're needed.

This month, our control vehicle, OM3, and our off road vehicle, OM5, were due for their MOT, and we'd like to say a huge Thank You to the fantastic team at Saddleworth Motor Services, who kindly carried them out completely free of charge.
