Parent, grandparents, and any one else who cares for a child are their first and most important teacher - but it's not always easy! If you would like to feel more confident supporting pre-school children's learning at home, 'Early Start' courses delivered by our Family Learning team are for you.

Using themes based on the Early Years Foundation Stage framework, you'll discover who you can support children to develop listening, speaking and communication skills through simple activities, and use rhymes, books, songs and play to focus on sounds, words, shapes, colours and numbers.

Courses start on Wednesday 30 September and Thursday 1 October at venues across York:
πŸ“ Low Moor Centre (Wednesdays, 9:15 - 11:15am)
πŸ“ Westfield Primary School (Wednesdays, 12:30 - 2:30pm)

Are you confident using a smartphone, tablet and computer - and do you think you could share those skills with others?

The Digital Friendly York team are looking for Digital Champion volunteers to help to bridge the digital divide and join them at outreach sessions at community venues including (but not limited to!) St Wulstan's Church Cafe, Marjorie Waite Court (Clifton), Southland's Planet Food Cafe and Foxwood Community Centre. You don't need to be able to attend every session, but it would be useful if you could commit to one or two regular sessions.

To find out more about what the role includes, contact the team on [email protected].

Do you know someone who's always the one others turn to for advice? Maybe it's you.

Our new Community Navigators training is free, and open to anyone who supports others with information, advice or guidance. Whether that's part of your job, something you do as a volunteer, or just a role you've found yourself in within your community.

You'll build your confidence, learn practical tools, and finish with a Certified Work and Skills Navigator digital badge to show for it.

Choose from a rolling online course (running August 2026 – March 2027) or in-person workshops held across York.
