UTGSSA: COMMEMORATING WORLD SICKLE CELL DAY

Brilliant Minds of SSA,

Today, the 21st Executive Council of UTGSSA joins the world in commemorating World Sickle Cell Day, observed to raise awareness about sickle cell disease and support individuals and families affected by the condition.

This year's theme, "Closing the Survival Gap: Equity in Sickle Cell Disease"calls for urgent action to address the disparities in healthcare access, treatment, diagnosis and support experienced by individuals living with sickle cell disease. It emphasizes the need to ensure that every person affected by the condition has an equal opportunity to receive quality healthcare and live a healthy, fulfilling life.

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder that affects millions of people worldwide, causing red blood cells to become abnormally shaped, leading to severe pain, anemia, infections and other health complications. Despite these challenges, many individuals living with sickle cell disease continue to show remarkable strength, resilience and courage every day.

As students and future professionals, let us use this day to educate ourselves, promote early screening, encourage voluntary blood donation and advocate for improved healthcare and support systems for those living with sickle cell disease. Together, we can help break the stigma, spread awareness and build a more informed and compassionate society.

Remember to know your status, support those affected, spread awareness and save lives.
