Allihies Copper Mines Museum

Allihies Copper Mines Museum Allihies Copper Mine Museum is a unique public attraction, for anyone with an interest in Geology

Located on the South-Westerly limits of the Beara Peninsula, the small and charming village of Allihies, is renowned worldwide for its breathtaking views and complex geological formations. As you enter the locality, you see the landscape speckled with the remnants of large engine houses, remaining from the great mining activities of the 1800's. These haunting landmarks, illuminate not only a boomi

ng copper industry, but also a perilous age, which took the lives of many a brave miner. Our museum takes you through the villages rich and vibrant history, from the Bronze Age right through to the mid 1960's, when mining activities ceased. You will discover the story of the Puxley Family, in particular "Copper John", and how they led they the charge in extracting the precious copper ore beneath them. Interestingly, we also outline the social impacts which developed as a result of the mines. Following the museum, take to the Copper Mine Trail, where you can get up close and personal with the mines themselves. Here, its easy to envision the harsh terrains endured by the miners, especially when you arrive at the deep Mountain Mines, which go to depths of almost half a kilometer. Don't forget to keep your eye out for evidence of copper in the area, within the local host rock! Afterwards, return to our Copper Cafe, where we serve caramel lattes, to locally sourced crab in our open sandwich range. Please contact us with any queries, and feel free to book groups in advance. Protecting West Cork’s Heritage.
This is Kealogue Engine House in Allihies.
1812 saw the beginning of copper mining at the most western end of the Beara Peninsula. It would transform the area forever. This was one of the large engine houses that would have housed the steam engines that made the mining possible, constantly pumping out water for deeper mining below sea level

I’m thrilled to announce that my department and the Heritage Council will be providing €25,000 in funding towards the first step in conserving and restoring this important heritage project. Thank you to Paul O’Sullivan and Beara Tourism for caring so much about West Corks Industrial Heritage.

💝For the first time this year, the temperature has risen to over 20°C, and our lovely visitors decided to make the most of it by coming to the Allihies Copper Mine Museum! 🤩The museum is housed in a beautiful little Methodist church, built in 1845 for the Cornish mining community.
⚒️Today, the museum is a proud part of our shared heritage, and we’re committed to sharing our history with visitors from all over the world.
We’re hoping for many more days like this - beautiful weather and our museum full of wondering visitors! 🌞⛏️

🛘From the mines of Allihies to the silver mines of Tarnowskie Góry…⚒️
It’s something special to stand underground in a UNESCO World Heritage Site and recognise the same story - communities built around what lay beneath the earth, and the shared responsibility we all carry to keep that memory alive.
The 3rd International Conference of Mining and Underground Museums ( ) brought together heritage professionals from across the globe, and moments like these - seeing the scale and craft of what miners left behind in Tarnowskie Góry- are exactly why that conversation matters.
🕯️⚒️Mining heritage isn’t just history. It’s people, place, and pride. 🌍⚒️🪙
