Our Connecting Communities programme workshop this week started with Itofa from Oxfam asking the question 'What is wrong with humanity?'

There were excellent conversations throughout the day in Wexford Arts Centre. As this monthly group continues to grow, we were delighted to welcome some new members.

Really looking forward to the next session which will focus on democracy, and continues on the last Friday in June, in the Arts Centre.

Connecting Communities is a Wexford Local Development programme supporting people from across Co. Wexford who care deeply about social justice, inclusion and making a difference in their communities.
Through monthly workshops, shared learning and inspiring guest speakers, participants are building confidence, skills and connections to help turn ideas into collective action. It’s been wonderful to bring together such a diverse group of emerging community leaders, all committed to creating positive change and strengthening community voice.

Strengthening Collaboration for Outdoor Recreation Across Ireland

Our Rural Recreation Officer, Georgina Gaul, recently took part in a
national networking forum hosted by the Department of Rural and Community Development, the Department of the Gaeltacht, and
Comhairle na Tuaithe.

The session focused on the rollout and administration of County Outdoor Recreation Plans, bringing together counties at every stage of delivery.
What made the day genuinely valuable was the openness in the room. Counties with well‑established plans shared practical insights — how they began, what structures helped them progress, the obstacles they had to navigate, and the lessons they learned along the way. Their willingness to speak candidly created a space where counties still in the early phases could ask questions, compare approaches, and gather guidance grounded in real experience.

Chaired by Éamon Ó Cuív, the forum struck the right balance between reflection and forward momentum. Department staff were present throughout, listening closely to the challenges raised and engaging directly on how best to support County Outdoor Recreation Committees as they work to deliver on their recommendations.

The clear consensus at the end of the day was that this kind of shared learning is not just beneficial — it’s essential.
When counties exchange ideas, hurdles, and solutions openly, the entire national effort to enhance outdoor recreation becomes stronger, more coordinated, and more impactful.

A productive day, and one that will undoubtedly help shape the next steps in delivering high‑quality outdoor recreation opportunities for communities across the country.

Empowering Outdoor Leaders Through National Training Initiatives

With Rural Recreation Officers from across the country completing Lowland Leader training recently, Georgina — our Wexford RRO — jumped at the chance to refresh the qualification she first achieved in 2020.
Huge thanks to the Department of Rural and Community Development, the Gaeltacht, and Mountaineering Ireland for organising this fantastic opportunity, and to Brian Bateson of ClimbIt for delivering such engaging, practical training.
Keeping skills like navigation, safety, group management, and environmental awareness sharp is essential for leading people confidently in the outdoors. Georgina’s commitment to staying current ensures our communities can continue to enjoy and explore the natural environment safely and with enthusiasm.

Wexford was well represented in the Aviva Stadium today at the Social Inclusion Forum and launch of the Roadmap for Social Inclusion 2026-2030 by An Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Minister Dara Calleary TD

The ambition of the Roadmap is to tackle poverty and make Ireland one of the most socially inclusive countries in the world. Programmes we deliver locally here in Co. Wexford, like SICAP, TUS, the Community Connection Project, the Rural Social Scheme, Traveller Health, Cornmarket Project, the Little Jobs Service, Empowering Communities, Workability & our Local Area Employment Service are fundamental to enable this ambition to become a reality.

It is important that voices from communities and people with lived experience are heard in these forums, and many people spoke of how vitally important it is that the actions in the new Roadmap are now implemented across all Government Departments.

AI Training Series Gets Underway in Wexford!

There was great energy and enthusiasm at Kilcannon Garden Centre & Restaurant as members of the County Wexford Social Enterprise Network gathered for the first session in our AI Training Series.

Led by Sam Marchetti of ConsortiaCo, the interactive masterclass explored how Artificial Intelligence is transforming the way organisations work, communicate and plan for the future. Participants gained practical insights into AI tools, discovered ways to improve efficiency and productivity, and discussed real-world applications that can help social enterprises strengthen their impact and reach.

It was a highly engaging and educational morning, with plenty of discussion, ideas and inspiration as attendees began building their confidence in using AI in their organisations.
The learning journey continues with our four online workshops throughout June, covering AI foundations, workflows and project management, marketing and funding, and integration and policy design.

If you would like to join the online sessions, please contact Helena Dempsey at [email protected] or call 087 1737502 to reserve your place.

🌿 Great news for our walking community! 🌿

We’re delighted to share that Minister Dara Calleary recently announced over
€485,000 in new investment to upgrade 52 walking and hiking trails around
the country included in the Department of Rural and Community
Development’s Walks Scheme.

We are really pleased that some of our trails are included in this.

This funding will support resurfacing, re-routing and general enhancement works—ensuring that Ireland’s rural trails remain safe, enjoyable and accessible for everyone who loves getting outdoors.

Here in Wexford Local Development, we are proud to play a hands‑on role in managing our Walks Scheme routes. Our Rural Recreation Officer works closely with landowners and community groups, not just responding to issues when they arise, but actively monitoring and maintaining trail features year‑round. This proactive approach means better-quality trails, fewer disruptions, and a more enjoyable experience for walkers, families and visitors.

We are grateful to the landowners who continue to open their land to the public, and to the volunteers and local groups who help keep these trails thriving. This new investment strengthens that partnership and supports the long-term sustainability of our outdoor amenities.

Here’s to even better trails ahead—and many more miles enjoyed in nature 🌲🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️
