COMMUNITY and REGIONAL COLLABORATION.

The 2026 Leadership and Project Management Training (LPMT) of the ASEAN Japan Environmental Leaders Network (AJYELN) kicked off with the opening program at the ASEAN Secretariat. It was graced by the presence and message of support from H. E. Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations; His Excellency Yonetani Koji, the Ambassador of Japan to ASEAN; and Secretary-General of the ASEAN Japan Centre, Dr. Chris Hirabayashi. Japan fellow- Taketo Kugunita and Thailand fellow- Pawarisa Bhurinuntakul, gave their messages as representatives of 2026 Cohort. After the opening program, Dr. Vong Sok of the Environment Division at the ASEAN Secretariat delivered a lecture abour the policies and state of environment in the ASEAN region and beyond. In the afternoon, the fellows visited REkosistem Dry Hub at Bogor, Indonesia to see how materials are being recovered in their facility. Day 1 was indeed a productive day to start the program.

He is dedicated to education and research in the investiaation of microplastics in environmental matrices. He has studied and identified microplastics, plastic debris pollution, and plastic additives in dumping soils, plastic waste sediments, surface water, and coastal areas. A contributor to the ASEAN-Japan Future Leaders Declaration on Marine Plastic Waste, he continues to study the microplastics in Myanmar's environment and shares his experiences and knowledge with young communities through AJYELN and universities in Mvanmar

AJYELN 2.0 2026 Fellows, Officially Launched!

On July 7, 2026, the ASEAN-Japan Centre (AJC) ASEAN Japan Young Environmental Leaders Network (AJYELN) welcomed 29 young environmental leaders from all 10 ASEAN Member States and Japan into the AJYELN 2.0 cohort — kicking off a shared journey under the theme:

✨ “Youth for a Plastic-Resilient Region: Action. Innovation. Transformation.” ✨

The ceremony brought together voices from across the region:
🎤 Dr. Katrina Navallo (AJC) opened with the programme’s mission
🎤 Ms. Keiko Omori (Japan’s Ministry of the Environment) & Dr. Vong Sok (ASEAN Secretariat) shared remarks of support
🔬 Dr. Ryota Nakajima (JAMSTEC) delivered a keynote diving deep — literally — into plastic pollution in the open ocean and deep sea
🤝 Ms. Sarah Rauzana (ASEAN Youth Organization) & Ms. Ashimine Yoriko (Climate Youth Japan) welcomed the fellows on behalf of youth partners

These 29 fellows will spend the coming months turning ideas into action — building community-based projects to tackle plastic pollution at home, backed by training, mentorship, and a growing regional network. Please stay tuned for their amazing activities and impact throughout the ASEAN-Japan region.
