GUARDIANS OF THE FLAME

MR. MAURICE MASON

There are those who join a political movement. And there are those whose vision, courage, and determination help build the movement itself.

Maurice Mason was one of them.

A barrister, trade unionist, political organiser and parliamentarian, Mason belonged to the generation of Saint Lucians who challenged the political order and helped shape a new political future.

In 1961, he joined Sir John Compton and Dr. Vincent Monrose in forming the National Labour Movement. As Secretary of the NLM, Mason played a key role in the collaboration with the People's Progressive Party that led to the formation of the United Workers Party in 1964.

He was more than a founding member.

He helped bring the Party into existence.

Mason went on to win the Dennery constituency for the UWP in 1964 and served as a Minister without Portfolio in the first UWP Government.

His political career was tragically brief. Maurice Mason died in 1966, at just 39 years old.

But the flame he helped ignite did not die with him.

Today, the United Workers Party remembers Mr. Maurice Mason as a Guardian of the Flame—a founding figure whose contribution remains woven into the history of the Party and the political development of Saint Lucia.

The flame endures. 🔥

THE CORNERSTONE

Some stones are rejected because they are not yet understood.

Some are set aside because their time has not yet come.

But what is destined to become the cornerstone cannot be buried forever.

What was rejected shall be lifted and be the cornerstone.
