Happy Friday! In his keynote address to the Digital Innovators Summit at American Corner Maseru today, CDA Hines championed U.S.-Lesotho partnership in digital innovation and AI, highlighting American-led initiatives — from drone delivery to e-commerce and data infrastructure — as pathways to shared prosperity and Lesotho's emergence as a regional AI hub.

As Basotho innovators and entrepreneurs capitalize on opportunities presented by the AI revolution, CDA Hines emphasized the transformative nature of U.S. company Convalt Energy’s 100 billion maloti project in Lesotho to construct 1,200 megawatts of electricity generation as well as a data center, the heart of AI infrastructure.

Kudos to International Visitor Leadership Program alum Tello Leballo on a third successful year of this great initiative!

Congratulations to these dedicated Lesotho government officials! They will spend next week at the International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) in Gaborone, Botswana learning advanced interview techniques.

The training will enhance Lesotho’s investigative capacity and help law enforcement effectively obtain information needed to solve complex crimes.

ILEA brings together law enforcement agencies from across the region, strengthening transnational cooperation, increasing law enforcement capacity, and reaffirming 60 years of U.S.-Lesotho relations.

We are honored that His Majesty King Letsie III met with former U.S. House of Representatives Majority Leader and Convalt Energy Board Member Richard Gephardt to advance efforts to secure Lesotho’s future as a regional leader in energy and digital infrastructure.

As a board member and shareholder of U.S.-based Convalt Energy, Mr. Gephardt had an engaging discussion with His Majesty about Convalt’s proposal to build 1,200 Megawatts of hydropower and an integrated AI data center project (“Project Kobong”). On June 4, 2026, Convalt and the Ministry of Energy of the Kingdom of Lesotho signed a binding Memorandum of Agreement for this project valued at $6.2 billion (98 billion maloti) where this project will be the largest foreign direct investment in Lesotho’s history. This project will propel Lesotho as a power exporter, eliminate costly electricity imports from South Africa, and give Lesotho a central role in powering the AI future while also generating substantial U.S content and manufacturing where American exports are expected to exceed $2 billion.

We thank His Majesty and Mr. Gephardt for their time and their forward-thinking perspectives. Together we will secure a brighter future for Basotho and the people of the United States.

Chargé d’Affaires Tom Hines, Minister of Youth Honorable Pitso Lesaoana, and Press Attaché to the Prime Minister Mr. Thapelo Mabote officially welcomed the inaugural cohort of Sebabatso entrepreneurs to a transformative three-day intensive digital entrepreneurship and AI training at the American Corner.

This pioneering collaboration between the American Corner, the U.S. Embassy, and The Right Honorable Prime Minister Matekane’s Sebabatso initiative provides entrepreneurs with the skills and knowledge to compete in the global digital marketplace, leveraging cutting-edge American technologies to strengthen their ventures and address Lesotho's unemployment challenges.

CDA Hines highlighted the importance of collaboration with Sebabatso and emphasized the ripple effect of entrepreneurial success: "When entrepreneurs thrive, they create jobs, inspire communities, and drive measurable economic growth. Through this initiative, participants will position Lesotho not merely as a beneficiary of AI and digital technology, but as an active architect in shaping how these innovations serve emerging markets."

Throughout the year, additional cohorts will receive this critical training, building a network of digitally empowered entrepreneurs ready to advance Lesotho’s position in the global AI revolution.

Charge d’Affaires Hines met the Honorable Minister of Health ‘Mamokete Ntšekhe to discuss ongoing efforts to strengthen Lesotho’s healthcare system through the $364 million (M6 billion) MOU signed in December.

We look forward to working with Minister Ntšekhe to continue to save lives and grow Lesotho’s self-reliance, building on the remarkable progress the country has made against HIV/AIDS resulting from over $1 billion (M16.4 billion) in assistance from the United States over nearly two decades.

Embassy Maseru is proud to have supported her leadership journey through the Young African Leaders Initiative Regional Leadership Center. The United States remains committed to its longstanding partnership with Lesotho in building a healthier and resilient future for Basotho.
