It was the 47th annual Swimming – Biking – Running of the “Rustman” , a time-honored tradition on Kwajalein Atoll for athletes to push themselves, mind, body, and spirit. Starting in the water at Echo Pier, the competitors take off at the sound of the start, Swimming 1kilometer, being cheered on by spectators from the shoreline of the lagoon.
Once they reach Emon beach they exit the water steadying their footsteps before crossing the timekeeper line to rinse off the salt water before mounting their bikes for the 42K two wheeled portion of the race and make their way 6 times around Bucholz Army Airfield. Each lap they pass the support area along 9th street and encounter one of the more delicate transitions; the handoff of the water cups from the Kwajalein 314 Scout troop led by Reagan Test Range’s, Range Branch Chief, Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Smith. While some pass by without an H2O handoff, many reach out with bated breath, as speed connects with a stationary hand gently testing the laws of physics. While some brave souls daringly gesture for the refreshingly cold deluge of an ice-cold water splash as they speed by in the heat of the day. No matter which path is chosen, it is an entertaining location to watch and cheer.
Upon completing the 6th lap, riders peel off and head back towards Emon for the final transition to the running portion of the Rustman, final taxing of everything they have as they head out on wobbly legs for the 10k. The sun begins to set as Rustonians weave their way through the housing area for the last time. Onlookers, family, and friends cheer every runner that passes. The same spectators cheered into the darkness for every athlete to make it to the finish line.
Every one of the 27 Rustman Contenders and 5 teams were winners, but one effortlessly crossed the line with a total time of 2:26:13, Congratulations Mandy Melody for the overall win. Eric Miller was not far behind with a time of 2:35:34, and Corrode & Conquer coming in with 2:40:43 for the best team. Congratulations to ALL those who dropped into the water for one of the most challenging days of your lives. Next……..the Rusty Family!! Photos by Sherman Hogue, USAKA-PAO
