WILDFIRE CONTINUES TO DEVASTATE DAURES, URGENT STATE RESPONSE DEMANDED

27 July 2026, Monday
Windhoek Environment, Forestry and Tourism

Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) Chief Whip and Shadow Minister of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, Hon. Likando Rodrick Liwela, has issued an urgent appeal for government intervention as a wildfire continues to burn in parts of the Daures Constituency.

According to a statement released by Hon.
Liwela, recent footage from the affected area indicates that the fire remains active, destroying grazing land and posing a threat to local livelihoods, wildlife, and the environment.
The parliamentarian expressed concern over what he described as an insufficient emergency response, arguing that communities have largely been left to confront the disaster with limited resources while awaiting assistance from authorities.

Hon. Liwela contrasted the situation in Daures with the recent response to a wildfire in Linyanti, where coordinated efforts reportedly succeeded in bringing the blaze under control. He said similar levels of urgency and resource mobilisation are now required in Daures to prevent further environmental and economic damage.

In his capacity as Shadow Minister of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, Hon. Liwela called on the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism and the Office of the Prime Minister, through the Directorate of Disaster Risk Management, to implement several immediate measures.
Among the actions proposed are the deployment of additional firefighting personnel and equipment to the constituency, the establishment of a multi-agency emergency response involving regional authorities, farmers, communities and emergency services, and a rapid assessment of damage to grazing land, wildlife, tourism assets and infrastructure.

He also urged authorities to provide immediate relief to affected residents and farmers and to accelerate the development of adequately equipped rural fire brigades and wildfire preparedness systems in constituencies considered vulnerable to wildfires.

Hon. Liwela argued that recurring wildfire incidents across Namibia have exposed shortcomings in the country's preparedness and response mechanisms, particularly in rural areas.
He said affected communities should not be left to face such disasters without adequate state support.
The wildfire remains active, with concerns growing over the potential impact on agriculture, biodiversity and local livelihoods if containment efforts are not strengthened.
