🌍 Preserving Namibia’s history, one record at a time.

How do we protect the records that tell the story of a nation?

Through UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme, with support from the Government of Japan, the National Archives of Namibia (NAN) is advancing the digitization of the country’s documentary heritage.

Thousands of archival records from the Administrator-General Collection have already been digitized, helping protect fragile historical materials and expand access to Namibia’s history for researchers, students, institutions and future generations.

To support this work, the UNESCO Windhoek National Office provided the National Archives of Namibia with professional-grade digitization scanners, high-performance computers and secure external storage drives, strengthening the digital infrastructure needed to preserve Namibia’s documentary heritage.

The initiative is also building national expertise, with four graduate interns gaining hands on experience in archival digitization, digital preservation and records management, developing skills that will help carry Namibia’s documentary heritage into the digital age.

The National Archives of Namibia is proud to have its staff members participating in the ESARBICA Training Programme on Records and Archives Management in Maseru, Lesotho.

This regional training provides an excellent platform for professionals to strengthen their knowledge, exchange best practices, and enhance their skills in modern records and archives management. The programme also promotes collaboration among archives and records management professionals across Eastern and Southern Africa.

The National Archives of Namibia is conducting a three-day training on Records Disposal Guidelines for officials from the Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare from 8–10 July 2026.

The training is aimed at strengthening participants' understanding of the proper appraisal, retention, and disposal of public records in accordance with the Archives Act, ensuring compliance, accountability, and the efficient management of government records.

Through initiatives such as these, the National Archives of Namibia continues to support public institutions in promoting sound records management practices and safeguarding Namibia's documentary heritage.

The National Archives of Namibia was pleased to host the Ministry of Works and Transport for a familiarization visit aimed at enhancing understanding of the Archives' mandate, services, and the importance of effective records and archives management.

The visit provided an opportunity to explore archival collections, preservation processes, and digitization initiatives while highlighting the vital role archives play in supporting accountability, transparency, and preserving Namibia's documentary heritage.

We thank the Ministry of Works and Transport for their interest and look forward to continued collaboration in promoting sound records management across the public sector.

The National Archives of Namibia is currently conducting a 5-day Basic Records Management Training in Swakopmund for officials from the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism.

This training is designed to strengthen records management knowledge and skills, promoting efficient recordkeeping practices that support accountability, transparency, and improved service delivery.

Together, we are building a stronger records management culture for effective governance.

The National Archives of Namibia is currently conducting the Basic Records Management Training at Okashana Rural Development Centre, Omuthiya from 15 - 19 June 2026 for the Ministry of Urban & Rural Development registry staff members.

This initiative is imparting knowledge on records management, ensuring accountability, and safeguarding Namibia’s documentary heritage. By sharing knowledge and expertise, the training is empowering the institution to manage records effectively and maintain reliable access to information for future generations.

The visit provided an opportunity to share insights on archives and records management, preservation, and the important role archives play in safeguarding Namibia’s documentary heritage.

The National Archives of Namibia wishes to inform the public that its offices will be temporarily closed on Wednesday , 10 June 2026, from 08h00 to 13h00 due to the hosting of the World Book Day Celebration which will take place in the National Archives and Library foyer.

Normal services and operations will resume after 13h00. NAN apologizes for any inconvenience caused and appreciates the public’s understanding and cooperation during this important occasion.

From 1–6 June 2026, staff members of the National Archives of Namibia have been participating in an intensive In-Service Training Programme aimed at enhancing professional skills, expanding institutional knowledge, and strengthening service delivery.

The training has provided staff with an opportunity to refresh and deepen their understanding of key archival and records management practices, emerging trends in information management, customer service, and the preservation of Namibia's documentary heritage.

By investing in continuous learning and professional development, the National Archives remains committed to building a knowledgeable and capable workforce that can effectively serve researchers, government institutions, and the public.
